Debling deserves props for this. He's one of the first characters to vocalize it.

false

Debling is one of the first characters in the show to take it 100% seriously that Penelope and Colin need a chaperone. Even in this season, they get a ton of time alone together.

I think that is where the seriousness of the assertion that she would inevitably cheat comes from. Like, he's the first character in the show to genuinely see and vocalize the mature and sexual nature of their relationship.

It is a stark contrast to the friendly language that Pen/Colin and their families use to discuss their relationship. I thought it was really well done and really well phrased. There's a lot of subtle subtext.

It doesn't help Pen's case that he is foreshadowing what happens two minutes later, where she gives in at the first indication that Colin has feelings for her.

The Nahuel and Leah Clearwater pairing could be a gold mine if SMeyer knew how to push away her racist portrayals in a more respectful direction.

Luke Newton / Acting Awards

The more I watch, the more I'm flabbergasted by the work Luke has done in this season. I know Nicola is amazing but I really do feel Luke had the more challenging part to play here because we've known about her feelings for years and she's so much more obvious. Whereas Luke had to play a character who is withholding emotion and still get the emotion across. He had to also as an actor make sure not to do too much too soon to allow there to be an emotional build to that carriage scene. He's so conscious of each beat.

I know there are some who've said that Luke's acting weakened the romantic arc of Polin and statements like he's not a leading man, whereas I think the intimacy, vulnerability, even discomfort that keeps drawing us back again and again is entirely created by his work as an actor. Nicola also is just so perfect with his energy.

Obviously how things go in part 2 will add another layer but I'm impressed, honestly, really impressed, and I hope LN gets recognized for his work here.

No shame anymore

I can't believe I had to pause during the carriage scene the first time I watched it because it made me blush so hard and especially Colin's devilish look when Penelope touches his hair made me unconfortable because the emotions were so freaking intense.

Now I pause it, rewind it, put it at ,75 speed to admire every single possible detail. And I've done it what seems like a million times because it's perfection and I definitely envy them.

Colin with Marina vs with Pen

I just rewatched part of S1 and the way he is with Marina is SO different from how he is with Penelope.

With Marina he of course has a crush, but I feel like that is combined with how his people pleasing is at the fore. He’s anxious to impress her. SHE has to lure him into the library and initiate the kiss and try to seduce him and hint about marriage. And then Colin the people pleaser sees that she wants him to propose and is like of course let’s get married then! And THEN! He suggests a long engagement and waiting for at least a month. He doesn’t have this sense of passion for her. It’s almost like he’s into the idea of courting someone rather than actually courting someone - much like when you have your first bf/gf and it’s more about the thrill of having someone to date rather than the person themselves.

Whereas with Penelope, the people pleasing drops away and he is able to be his natural self - either in letters or in in person interactions. There is a natural warmth. And when he realizes his feelings for her he is absolutely chaotic. HE chases her down. HE dreams about her. Once they confess their love he literally cannot wait to kiss her and, ahem, do other things. He immediately proposes. He can’t even wait till the next morning to ask her mother for permission. It’s such a stark contrast.
