One man is in a critical condition and a woman is seriously injured after a stabbing in Marrickville on Thursday evening.

NSW Ambulance responded to reports of a stabbing on Sydenham Road just before 6pm and found a 25-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman suffering from knife wounds.

Paramedics treated the man for injuries to his neck, face, hand and back, and the woman for a stab wound to her throat.

The man was in a critical condition and the woman’s injuries were serious, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said.

They were both rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown. Paramedics were pictured taking the man with blood running down his face and wounds to his torso into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man at the scene and took him to Newtown Police Station, where he is assisting officers in their investigation into the incident. Police said the wounded pair and the arrested man are known to each other.

Police set up a crime scene and cordoned off multiple properties on Sydenham Road, close to Henson Park and Marrickville High School, and detectives were pictured entering a taped-off home.

Officers from the Inner West Police Area Command are investigating the circumstances that led to the stabbings.
