Smh people used to do this all over Reddit with Bitcoin before Reddit gold even existed. It shows off the currency's ability to do microtransactions and it's kind of fun too.

It used to be the /r/finance guys making comments like yours towards Bitcoin now it's people within our own community doing it towards IOTA

Dont get me wrong. It was not a bad intention. And I also like IOTA.

I just think tipping extreme low amounts show some king of disrespect. If someone wants to tip then tip at least an amount worth $1 or even a few cents. Tipping $0.000005 is just a joke because today its worth is nothing. Ok, could grow (but still would need a MASSIVE growth that $0.000005 would be worth a reasonable amount of money).

When someone spents BTC while shopping ... does he pay only 0,01% of the sum because BTC could go to 1 MIO? No.. Also you never know if IOTA will success or not.

IOTA is made for micro transactions. If 10 IOTA are worth >1$ (lets take $1 as a reasonable amount) then micro payments arent possbile anymore because one IOTA would be $0,1.

Realistically, if Amazon enabled payments with Bitcoin or Litecoin, who is going spend them on everyday items? The hype of Amazon enabling payments in crypto should boost their value, which is then a disincentive to spend them.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (6 children)

You've hit the nail on the head for one of Bitcoin's and crypto's problems as a currency. They increase in value so rapidly that anyone would be stupid to spend them today when they can be worth way more in the future by hoarding them. Kind of a good problem to have though I guess.

[–]onlyHereForBikesredditor for 2 months 10 points11 points  (2 children)

On the flip side, if I bought Bitcoin at $100usd at its current value I'd be much happier realizing gains by using it to make smaller day to day purchases on Amazon than cashing out large chunks of it at a time.

People spend bitcoins on Overstock, and they'll do the same on Amazon. There are a number of reasons people want to spend bitcoins.

[–]WorpeX 15 points16 points  (7 children)

Its mostly to avoid taxes

[–]bitcointothemoon_ 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Obligatory reminder that these transactions are taxable events if the user has capital gains, which is a huge disincentive to buying things with BTC for a lot of people.

There is a bill proposing that transactions under $600 be tax free, but it hasn't passed (yet?). https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/u-s-bill-would-ease-bitcoin-tax-regulations-for-small-transactions/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why a lot of people still think it's a bubble.. Which most of these things are actually. You need to look at the blockchain technology itself and it's real world applications. Spending the currency like you do with your $$ isn't really the main point IMO. People will launder money, buy shit because they can, try and avoid paying taxes, invest and speculate wildly.. But all of that is shorter term stuff. The real long term winners are things that will disrupt entire industries like banking, gambling, healthcare, etc.. Where blockchain tech replaces the current systems..

[–]JayWalkerC 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why would that be a disincentive? You can suddenly buy more stuff with the same amount of currency you already had.

[–]ZoudenPlatinum | QC: CC 151 | r/Android 36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if you don't spend it, you'll have even more. It encourages hoarding rather than spending.

[–]neomatrix248Crypto Expert | QC: CC 24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is that if all of your discretionary income is in Bitcoin, you have to either spend it or buy nothing. But you're right, until Bitcoin or crypto builds enough confidence for people to convert all of their extra cash into it, people will be disincentivized to spend it.

[–]Sublime-SilenceCC: 1939 karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably spend some litecoin here and there. I mined it back before asics was a thing after bitcoin became unminable due to asics. These days I just buy pc parts of newegg with them whenever I fancy an upgrade. It would be nice to have other options.

[–]bobleplask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend bitcoins, and buy the dip.

[–]whiskeyandbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crypto currencies are deflationary by nature so there's always a discentive to spend them anyway. Looking past that, the affect it has on the market value of the coin should be irrelevant. It's a currency trying to be made a standard, and only until then will it become less volatile so that people consider spending it, but until then the way it is going to become popular is by giving people the actual access to use them for different things. I know you're just making a small (and truthful) comment, but in the long run the price it costs in fiat currency should become irrelevant, one has to look past all these conundrums that pop up.

[–]AkumaBengoshiNew to Crypto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me. There's really no point to crypto currency unless it gets spent. That's what makes it currency as opposed to a commodity.

[–]thunderatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]Bjandthekatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mine, along with my roommates and a few friends. If we ever spot anyone money, btc is usually the repayment form since we all have it lying around. I don’t regularly shop at Newegg, but it’s great to them because they accept bitcoin. I’m sure they would instantly jump ship to amazon if they started accepting crypto.

[–]DavisFinanceTin 4 points5 points  (4 children)

90% of my income is currently paid to me in BTC. I currently have to buy Amazon gift cards from people for BTC if I want to buy something on Amazon.

I have incentive to spend my LTC and BTC at Amazon.

See how that works.

[–]vincethepince0 / 0 🦠 11 points12 points  (1 child)

90% of my income is currently paid to me in BTC.

You are the .00001%. There is little profit to be gained by Amazon from accepting crypto.

[–]individual0 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Who do you work for?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's really the hurdle.

People who are good with money use credit card incentives and pay them all off every month.

People who are bad with money use credit, which cryptos are not useful for.

It will take instability in a major currency or businesses creating incentives to use them to make cryptos viable.

[–]Justsomedudeonthenet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But people who used to be bad with money, and are now good with it can't get those good credit cards, and don't want to use credit.

I spend some of my Bitcoin because I want to see the tech advance, and because its easy to send a payment without any third parties involved. And no credit required.

Amazon's structure is reinvestment. A good chunk of profit goes back into their company. If nobody else that complements their model accepts the coin, they have no business bothering with it. Crypto has to become more mainstream before that happens. One step at a time bois.

[–]McNastiGold | QC: CC 50 | r/NBA 530 2 points3 points  (2 children)

would much prefer the option to pay via paypal

[–]ZoudenPlatinum | QC: CC 151 | r/Android 36 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's very telling that PayPal, a service nearly everyone hates, is still a better option than crypto.

[–]McNastiGold | QC: CC 50 | r/NBA 530 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to me there are two main problems with paying with crypto:

  1. Volatility: Lets say I earn 10 euro an hour and going out for dinner costs me 20 EUR/0.05 NEO. I will always pay in EUR just because I know I worked two hours to earn that. If I pay on Neo i can never be to sure how much that is actually worth at the moment. Could be that Neo is soaring and I only spend on hour of work on my meal or it is shitting the bed and I just spend a full 8 hour day of work on ome meal. Sure, the analogy is not the best and the calculations are very simplified but I hope that point comes across.

  2. Convenience I already have EUR. Even if my Dinner is charged in Dollar, i can just pay with my EUR debit or credit card and my bank will take care of the rest for me. This might be highly unpopular here but it is the reality. To pay in NEO, i would have to go to my online banking account, transfer EUR to Coimbase, eait 5 to 7 days, exchange my EUR to BTC, send my BTC to Bittrex, wait two hours and buy NEO with my BTC. Now i have waited 7 Days and spend aboit 20 bucks/0.05 NEO in fees for my meal that was initially 20 EUr / 0.05 NEO to begin with.

Also here I realized that in reality I would probably have my Euro exchanged to Neo way before going to the restaurant and probably also more NEO than I needed for the meal because I also wanted to buy an Ipad or some shit so the fees get relative. But still, it is way to inconvinient for the layman (just think about your mom and your pops going througg all day for a bacon sandwich, fries, a soda and some desert)

Until these things are figured out better, Crypto can have revolutionary tech, can be anon and cooler that FIAT, adoption will fail. Easy as that.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pfftt i would never use crypto in daily life so rest of the world too.

The block time looks pretty consistent https://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/bitcoin-confirmationtime.html that's what the difficulty changes are for. It feels like Amazon could make this work, if they essentially acted as an exchange the same way a place like Coinbase does.

  • Allow users to "fill their account" with bitcoin.
  • This goes into a giant wallet the same as an exchange uses
  • The data base tracks each user's portion, the same as an exchange does
  • Buying a good would instantly transfer the portion of bitcoin out of a user's account, the same as when you buy a bitcoin or sell it on an exchange, it's instantaneous. Fees could also be significantly reduced per transaction.

This way the transactions clog the Cloud, but not the bitcoin network, and it would be able to handle volume quickly. Now that Bitcoin is popular... if a place like Amazon did this... would make the coin very usable.
