Manatees and Alligators: Florida's Odd Couple
Blue Spring State Park is winter habitat for manatees, and manatees share that habitat with alligators, the only animals at the spring that can be as big as manatees. Are alligators a threat to manatees, and do the two species interact? Join Wayne Hartley, Save the Manatee Club's Manatee Specialist, to find out. Antillean manatees cruise the coastlines of Puerto Rico, spending most of their time feeding on the sea grass. But while they graze, they are vulnerable to being struck by speeding jet-skis and boats. At the Manatee Conservation Center, just outside the capital city of San Juan, several injured individuals and orphans are on their way to release in the wild.

Video shows manatees being harassed by beachgoers
Manatees are gentle giants and can be exciting to see, but like any animal, they need their space. Many people don’t realize their actions are harming the manatees. Digital photographer ‘Sky Beard’ captured drone footage of people on Bradenton Beach who thought the manatees were in trouble, but they were a mating herd.
Instead of getting out of the water, the people stayed in. One man is seen petting a manatee and even gets in between them. As the manatees tried to get away, more people crowded around them, possibly unaware they had interrupted a natural behavior, and the manatees were trying to get away from them.

BLUE SPRING STATE PARK
Conservation measures can produce astounding results. In 1970, two years before Blue Spring State Park was established, researchers tracked 14 manatees in the spring run. By 2005, after years of park improvements and manatee protection efforts, wintering manatee numbers exceeded 200. By 2018, that number skyrocketed to a record 485.
Besides sea cows, fish abound in the spring run, and these attract a variety of wading birds, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. To see the park’s wonders, one can hike along the spring run or on the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail. One can also launch a canoe or kayak, rent one at the park or take a guided riverboat cruise.
Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida in the United States. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming.
Please call Blue Spring State Park at 386-775-3663 before your visit to get the latest manatee count.

Blue Realm - Episode 11: Manatees and Dugongs in Danger
Each year, hundreds of critically endangered manatees are killed in U.S. waters by boats, disease and cold weather. 2006 was the worst year on record for manatee deaths – 416 animals perished. With only a few thousand remaining in the wild, mostly in heavily developed Florida wetlands, the clock is ticking in efforts to save this amazing mammal from extinction.
Another rare species and close relative of manatees is the dugong. Dugongs cling to survival in a few isolated corners of the globe. In marine sanctuaries in Abu Dhabi, the bizarre animals have been notoriously difficult to find, let alone photograph. Manatees and Dugongs features exclusive HD imagery of the mammals in the wild and examines efforts of scientists to protect the two species. The program also includes thrilling captures and field exams of manatees in Florida

Viva Puerto Rico premieres Wednesday, April 12, 8-9 pm ET. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/puerto-rico-about/15150/
Antillean manatees cruise the coastlines of Puerto Rico, spending most of their time feeding on the sea grass. But while they graze, they are vulnerable to being struck by speeding jet-skis and boats. At the Manatee Conservation Center, just outside the capital city of San Juan, several injured individuals and orphans are on their way to release in the wild.
