It began with a frantic 911 call from a woman in a dusty Arizona border town. A gang claiming to be affiliated with the Border Patrol had shot her husband and daughter. It was initially assumed that the murders were products of border drug wars ravaging the Southwest until the leader of one of the more prominent offshoots of the Minutemen movement was arrested for plotting the home invasion as part of a scheme to finance a violent antigovernment border militia.

And Hell Followed With Her: Crossing to the Dark Side of the American Border is award-winning journalist David Neiwert's riveting account of the life and death of America's Minutemen--and the terrifying story and psychology of movement leader Shawna Forde. A compulsive and brilliant portrait of cold-blooded killers and true believers, And Hell Followed With Her is at once a horrifying crime story and a frontline report on America's nativist foot soldiers.

"In a masterwork reminiscent of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, David Neiwert tells the gripping story of a far-right underworld awash in criminality, racism, and violence -- except that it happened here and every word is true."
-- Joe Conason, author of the
New York Times best seller Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth and editor-in-chief of The National Memo

"There is no more dogged or more courageous chronicler of the radical American Right than Dave Neiwert. In this latest work, he has found a human tragedy that is both utterly heartbreaking and utterly infuriating. He is the polestar by which we navigate the great distance between what we claim to be as a people, and what we truly are. A devastating, and extremely important, book."
   -- Charles P. Pierce,
Esquire Magazine, author of Idiot America: How Stupidity Became A Virtue In The Land Of The Free

"David Neiwert's latest book is a cogent and comprehensive look at contemporary border vigilante groups, built around that movement's most infamous crime -- the murder of a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter by a deranged nativist leader and her followers. This important volume reveals the stark racism and violence at the core of a movement that claims disingenuously to be defending America against dangerous foreigners.
-- Mark Potok, Senior Fellow, Southern Poverty Law Center

Editorial Reviews

Review

“David Neiwert has not only earned his investigative chops over the past decade or so by exploring the dangerous side of right-wing extremism—he's proven himself to be one of the more lyrical and elegant writers on the beat. …Neiwert's insights after covering right-wing extremism movements, his gift with language, his considerable storytelling skills all combine to make And Hell Followed With Her a near compulsive—and frightening—read. His ability to combine the history of these various organizations with the more immediate crime, and his analysis of the mindset of those who spent their lives immersed in the delusions of the right wing, make this book an important one, one with implications that reach far beyond one woman, two deaths and one border town….a radically scary wake-up call of forewarning.”
Daily Kos

“The pace is gripping as well as informative in ways human and political…”
Oregonian

“A taut true-crime story told with a measure of gravitas, gripping as much for the grisly particulars of a violent murder as for the fascinating context of the anti-immigrant movement playing out along the U. S-Mexico border....As the national debate on immigration heats up again, this is a must-read for those who seek a deeper understanding of the issues and emotions behind the rhetoric.”
Seattle Times

“A scouring investigation of the unorthodox methods of the anti-immigration Minuteman Project . . . . A sweeping account of some of [its] major players.”
Kirkus Reviews

“A taut true-crime story told with a measure of gravitas, gripping as much for the grisly particulars of a violent murder as for the fascinating context of the anti-immigrant movement playing out along the U.S.-Mexico border....As the national debate on immigration heats up again, this is a must-read for those who seek a deeper understanding of the issues and emotions behind the rhetoric.”

Once again, David Neiwert examines the dark corners of American conservatism and exposes the evil from which it derives its power. The first chapter, in which a young girl and her father are executed by "patriots," shook me like few other things I've read. From there, he careful tells of the rise of Shawna Forde in the militia movement and the media's complicity in turning her and the movement into American heroes.

One comes away from the book with a better understanding of the hate that drives such movements, and how such evil consumes those who embrace it. We see that in Shawna Forde, who now sits on death row, and in Chris Simcox--the national Minuteman leader who protected and defended her--who was arrested just last week for molesting children (for the second time by my count.)

Few people have spent as many years as Neiwert studying the extreme right, and mo one writes about the it as well as he does. Buy the book, and pick up "Strawberry Days," "In God's Country," and his other books as well. You'll thank me for it.

Apologies to those who came to read one of the General's reviews, his inner Frenchman got the best of him this time.

This nonfiction book is a good read about the rise of The Minute Men in response to America's sad and stupid immigration policy. There are plenty of ego maniacs, hustlers and psychotics to keep you entertained. The book opens and closes with a home invasion and murders committed by the craziest and most dangerous Minute Men with a long treatise in between on the rise and failings of the Minute Man movement from a reporter who had been studying right wing groups for decades. Those sympathetic to right wing causes will find fault, as some members of my book club did not think the author offered a fair and balanced portrayal of the events and the movement. I didn't find that the case. I think The Minute Men's actions speak loud and clear: a bunch of yahoos with guns looking for attention, which they often get by getting on the news and sometimes acting criminally. The news media - especially CNN & FOX - come off looking like morons. I think the book should have discussed in more detail the failings of the US immigration policy (jail CEO's for employing non-citizens) and the steps necessary to end illegal entry which now kills over 500 people a year in the deserts of the southwestern US.

This book is well written and well researched. It opens your eyes to the real thinking behind the small-minded Minutemen movement and how the right wing press and reporters were mislead by evil people, and how they reported lies and misled the world..

I stumbled upon this book, looking at Arizona history and law-enforcement.

I am curious as to WHY, Amazo would include book accolades at the top of the product Title page......?

So much for objectivity. Running more like a Barnes and Noble end-cap now?

I guess I'll have to read it.......NOT.

This book lets you know that the effusive self description of these folks is just whitewash(in more ways than one). Informative, pulling no punches on any side, Neiwert does the kind of real journalism so deeply missed these days.

I couldn't wade thru the flat prose and preaching in "And Hell Followed With Her". It was written in a style that I've never carried for, "True Crime". Unless one likes it, and many do, I recommend against it. I'll say this,, when I gave up on it felt like there was sand between my toes and I had a feel for what "border life" was like. Thanks but no thanks.

This investigative story gave me deep insights into the Minuteman movement. I appreciated the scholarship and passion that the author clearly evidenced for unearthing, connecting, and presenting the facts. However, the narrative lost its way and me as a reader in the excessive backstory about Shawna Forde, a right wing radical who commits murder. Too bad for her victims that Shawna is given the major treatment here. By the time, the author meanders back to the crime at the heart of his story, he's run out of space and literary license to describe the victims in a meaningful way. The murder of an innocent schoolgirl nearly becomes a sidebar. The readers barely know her.

I've followed for several years David Neiwert's work in exposing and explaining anti-immigration extremist groups. This book combines a particular 'true crime' story with an in-depth look at the modern Minuteman movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give this man a Pulitzer!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 29, 2013
This is essentially a forensic examination of a home invasion and murder of a family in the southern borderland of Arizona.
However its breadth and depth of research is truly remarkable and the author's clear, balanced and rational linking of the core events with the deeply infected political scene in the US, is worthy of a Pulitzer. The last 25% of the book is taken up with acknowledgments and finely detailed linkage to sources for everything written which serves to give gold-plated credibility to the central argument that right wing extremists, such as the Tea Party, are dependent on scapegoating minorities and are inextricably linked to the violence that inevitably follows. This book exposes the public hand washing that goes on in politics for the hypocrisy that it is.
As an Englishman I was initially drawn to the book because of references to places in both the US south-west and the Pacific north-west that I have visited and loved, but the central message is universal.
