TIL that not only did Christian Bale gain 40 pounds for his role in American Hustle, but his purposeful bad posture in the film gave him a herniated disc in his back that shrunk his height by three inches

Recently watched "American Hustle"...thoughts, comparisons, and why I don't think it's Oscar worthy (Spoilers)

I recently watched American Hustle and while it certainly had some excellent acting in it, the story seemed to fall flat in some areas and leave the audience in a lull.

I'll start by stating that I am not a film critic or even a film buff, I am just a guy who likes movies. That being said, I can generally follow a film without much effort and am not one of those people who needs to keep pausing in order to ask questions and figure out what is going on.

With this film, however, I found myself wondering why the hell they were even going after Carmine (Jeremy Renner) in the first place? What was the point? He seemed like a genuine guy and he wasn't corrupt to begin with, so why target him? Also, I thought they were contracted to capture 4 other people. The entire plot of the movie revolved around them getting Carmine (a genuinely nice guy) and as a result used him to get others after the fact. This seems weird. I figured they would want to get the people he (Christian Bale) was doing business with prior to his arrest. From what I observed Jeremy Renner's character went to what he thought was a private investor to fund his project on redoing Atlantic City. I am not sure what was illegal about that. He didn't really take a bribe considering all of the money was used towards the intended project. The illegal shit started happening when he began giving suitcases of money to other politicians to secure the "Sheiks" citizenship....but at the end of the day, how is that any different from a cop writing off a bunch of tickets for a friend or squashing a DUI for a family member?

I understand Bradley Coopers character wanted to make a name for himself, but I don't think they did a good job at explaining these details during his development. They kind of just threw you into it. Sometimes this works, but here I don't think it worked quite as well as it could've.

Next, this was a conman movie. When watching it I already knew it was up for Best Picture and so I was viewing it as one. I found myself constantly thinking about The Sting (1973) with Paul Newman and Robert Redford and found that this version of a conman film didn't really compare. That was a best picture film. American Hustle was still a great film, but I don't think it quite compares to it's predecessors.

Thoughts?
