[DISCUSSION] Is all apologies by nirvana hard to play?

I’m still a beginner but just learnt the intro and it was a bit difficult. Not sure if I’m just bad or is it not a beginner song?

Looking for songs with a similar feel to Nirvana's Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies, and Lithium

I've been really getting into Nirvana lately, and am now looking for similar bands and songs, especially ones like Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies, and Lithium.

I particularly enjoyed their MTV Unplugged performance, so I guess I'm looking for something quite raw.

Any suggestions are appreciated

"All Apologies" is the greatest song of all time. Thoughts?

So, "All Apologies" has been my favorite Nirvana song forever now. Up until this point, when someone asked me "what is your favorite song ever?" I always said "too many to choose!" But today I finally realized that All Apologies is my favorite song of all time. If someone gives me a choice of one song to play, I always say "Ooh! All Apologies!"

The song is just a masterpiece. The vocals in the studio version are absolutely perfect and the second chorus where the drums and guitar is a little louder and more prominent gives me goosebumps every time. Even the unplugged version was sung masterfully and I love that the violins are more noticeable in the unplugged version.

All Apologies by Nirvana

All Apologies by Nirvana is a song that expresses the existential angst and guilt of the singer, Kurt Cobain, who feels trapped in a life that he did not choose and cannot escape. The song is a paradoxical apology for being himself, for not being able to satisfy the expectations of others, and for the harm he has caused to himself and his loved ones. The song also reflects Cobain’s struggle with fame, depression, addiction, and suicide, which eventually led to his tragic death in 1994.

The song begins with the rhetorical question “What else should I be?” which implies that Cobain is dissatisfied with his identity and role in the world. He then offers “all apologies” for his existence, which he sees as a mistake or a burden. He sarcastically states that “everyone is gay”, which could be interpreted as a critique of the heteronormative society that he feels alienated from, or as a self-deprecating remark about his own sexuality, which was often questioned by the media and his peers. He also admits that he does not have the right to write or express himself, which shows his lack of confidence and self-esteem.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase “in the sun, in the sun, I feel as one”, which suggests that Cobain longs for a state of unity and harmony with himself and the world, a state that he can only achieve in death. The sun could symbolize the source of life, warmth, and happiness, or it could represent the fire that consumes and purifies him. He then contrasts this with the words “married, buried”, which imply that he feels trapped and suffocated by his marriage and his life, or that he sees marriage as a form of death.

The second verse of the song reveals Cobain’s envy and resentment towards those who are “easily amused”, who can find joy and meaning in simple things, unlike him. He describes his “nest of salt”, which could refer to his wounds, his tears, or his bitter and cynical attitude. He takes “all the blame” and “aqua seafoam shame” for his failures and flaws, which shows his self-loathing and guilt. He also mentions “sunburn, freezer burn, choking on the ashes of her enemy”, which could be metaphors for the physical and emotional pain he suffers, or the consequences of his drug abuse and his conflicts with his wife, Courtney Love.

The outro of the song consists of the repeated line “all in all is all we are”, which could be seen as a nihilistic statement that denies any transcendent meaning or value to human existence, or as a mystical affirmation that recognizes the interconnectedness and oneness of all beings. The song ends with a fade-out, which creates a sense of ambiguity and unresolved tension, leaving the listener to wonder about the fate and the message of the singer.

All Apologies by Nirvana is a song that explores the themes of identity, alienation, guilt, and death, from the perspective of a troubled and tormented artist who seeks redemption and peace in a world that he cannot understand or belong to. The song is a powerful and poignant expression of the human condition, and a testament to the genius and the tragedy of Kurt Cobain.
