The new Aephanemer album, “A Dream of Wilderness,” is an absolute masterpiece from a compositional standpoint. The arrangements are so good that I had goosebumps listening to them. I would go so far as to say that it’s some of the best music they’ve written to date, with beautiful melodies/harmonies, combined with the lush symphonic arrangements that they are known for. In short, this album is phenomenal. To my ears, it is essentially the modern equivalent of Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach. I truly can’t praise the arrangements/composition enough. My only complaint, is that the clean operatic vocals kind of detract from some of the material. (This is just my humble opinion.) To be fair, Aephanemer has done cleans on past albums as well, and I wasn’t too excited about that, so I ended up listening to the instrumentals of those tracks. With that said, I highly recommend listening to the instrumentals even if you love the clean vocals. The instrumental versions really showcase how talented this band is, and you will hear the subtleties that you may have missed on the vocal tracks. Anyway, I hope everyone else enjoys the new album as much as I do. If you haven’t listened yet, do yourself a favor and do it soon!
