I know I'm late to the Party, but Can We Just Talk About This Amazing Show, A League of Their Own?

As I said, I know I'm late to the party, but after some difficult months, I just reactivated my Amazon Prime and went looking yesterday for some new content as I'm currently laid up with a back injury. I stumbled upon this shakeup of the classic Rockford Peaches ladies baseball team from the 1940s

I found this gem of a show, and watched the whole season yesterday afternoon/evening and absolutely loved it! My best friend of 22 years and I have been big fans of Broad City for years so when I saw Abbi Jacobson's involvement, I was in.

But, there were so many great characters and it was such a good story! I absolutely love Roberta Colindrez (and how! 😉) and D'Arcy Carden is so awesome in everything too. Plus- bonus of Nick Offerman!

It was so great to see the Max storyline and her whole journey with Bertie. Chanté Adams did an amazing job and I saw she had writing credits too! So much inclusivity and telling stories that need to be told behind an already familiar story in US and female history.

It was touching, and funny, and exciting, and heartwarming. Idk, I just really enjoyed it. Anyone else?

Started watching A League of Their Own on Amazon Prime. I knew it had Abbi Jacobson (Bean), but was surprised to see it also had Nat Faxon (Elfo)!

Rant: A League of Their Own Series

I finally watched the first season of A League of Their Own on Amazon.

The show runner, Abbi Jacobson, is Jewish.

There is only one clearly Jewish character: Shirley Cohen. Her defining traits are that she is a highly anxious, homophobic, hypochondriac who is great at math.

The show is about the The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. A league that had Jewish players, several of whom are in the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Even with a Jewish show runner and real life Jewish historical figures upon whom to model characters, the only Jewish character is based on stereotypes.

"The Peripheral" and "A League of Their Own" cancelled by Prime Video

It seems that due to the ongoing strike Prime Video deleted two tv-series that were already renewed for second seasons, previously. While "The Power" is not named among the cancelled series (nor it was officially renewed for a second season, unlike The Peripheral and A League of Their Own), in the articles it's hinted that a lot of others could follow shortly if the strike doesn't end soon. Let's keep fingers crossed that every piece of the puzzle goes to the correct spot, so they can produce another season, even if much later...

Welcome! Everything is not fine. Reddit is introducing new API pricing that will drive all third party clients out of business. If you use RES (r/enhancement) you may be affected, too: https://redd.it/141hyv3 Even the author of r/toolbox is worried: “these API changes are part of a downward spiral… Reddit has gone from a platform where the code was open… to one where a once vibrant third party developer community has been dealt blow after blow.” https://redd.it/141locs

Scott Hasn't Seen: A League Of Their Own (1992) w/ D'Arcy Carden

30 years after its release, Scott and Sprague sit down to watch Gina Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and more in the classic 1992 sports film, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN! And it's good timing, as the brand new television adaptation launches NOW, starring today's special guest, D'Arcy Carden! Will Scott declare the film a home run, or a big old whiff??

Next week: Conan The Barbarian (1982)

A Full Year of “A League of Their Own”

I just wanted to mark the occasion: it was exactly one year ago today that “A League of Their Own” premiered on Amazon Prime. I had no idea that this series would take me on a riveting soul journey, and become so completely embedded in my heart. And I know that so many of you feel the same way. It’s been an emotional roller coaster to be a fan of this show, to fight for its survival, to weather disappointment, but it’s worth it. I am so grateful to Abbi and Will and everyone involved for creating it. The best thing that art can be is a life raft, something for future generations to grab onto as a way of surviving life’s tribulations. This show is a life raft, and I’m glad I grabbed on!

The r/baseball Off-Season Movie Club, Week 6: “A League of Their Own”

Welcome to r/baseball’s 2022-23 Off-Season Movie Club. While we count the long, cold hours until spring, we’ll meet here every Saturday to discuss some of the best (and maybe other not so great) films about our National Pastime. Watch the movies and share your thoughts, and we’ll get through this winter together!

Today, there’s no crying in baseball with A League of Their Own (1992).

  • Some Viewing Options: A League of Their Own is currently streaming on Paramount+. It’s also available for rent on Amazon for US$2.99.

  • Director: Penny Marshall

  • Writers: Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel

  • Starring: Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and Tom Hanks

  • Classic Moment, Out of Context: “Okay. Some of them are going home.”

  • Summary: Based loosely on the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), in A League of Their Own a group of women are hired to play ball in the Midwest, filling the gap left by men who have departed to fight in World War Two. Navigating the suffocating sexism of their times, the women of the AAGPBL’s Rockford Peaches fight the league ownership, the fans, their soused manager, and sometimes each other to earn respect and recognition as true athletes.

  • If you liked this, you might also like … to watch the recent reimagining of the story that is currently streaming on Amazon. You can also check Episode Six of Ken Burns’ Baseball, which covers the history behind the film. Here’s a short documentary about the AAGPBL, and there’s also plenty of footage out there from actual AAGPBL games.
