I think many people focus too much on getting 4* pokemon and think the rest is trash..
You can wait a hell of a long time before you get a 4* meta team together to do some raiding in this game, how about you get high CP mons of any IV stat, level them up, evolve them and enjoy the game.
Raids will be easier, rocket grunts will be easier, and even pvp will be more fun, because you'll have a bigger pokemon pool to source teams from. Because team comp matters more than IVs
Instead of transferring perfectly fine pokemon because they have 1,3% less attack than a 4* one.
IV optimisation is the last, final, finetuning step in the process to get an edge over the other guys who also did all the steps, yet it seems the only step for many people in dictating the importance of a pokemon.
If you have to ask someone else to tell you if any IV is good, or if it is worth powering up. IT IS, because it does not matter to you at all if you don't know what IVs are good for or how they are used.
Even in PvP I would argue the IVs don't matter until you hit the higher ranks, which most people don't. And if you're hardcore into PvP, of course you should try and get the perfect balance of IV's for the CP limited cups, but those aren't the people in this subreddit asking everyday 'should I purify' 'should I evolve' 'oh no my legendary 14/14/15 is shit because it's not perfect'.
You should be happy you caught a legendary, not unhappy because it has a few attack points less than it could have.
The stronger a pokemon is, the less the IV matters.
One example I will give to try and show how ridiculous this is;
Machamp, a strong budget fighter type. You could work on getting 6 to level 30 with the right moves to counter normal, ice, dark, rock and steel raid bosses with ease.
The base attack of a machamp is 234, the base attack of a 15 atk IV machamp is 249.
Let's say they are level 30, because that's an easy level to boost to.
The true attack of a 0IV machamp is then 171, the true attack of a 15 atk IV machamp is then 182
Let's assume the defending pokemon has 150 defense, and there is single type advantage and we're attacking with the fast move 'counter'.
0IV Machamp; (0.5x12x(171/150)x1.92)+1 = 14,13damage every 0.9 seconds
15IV Machamp; (0.5x12x(182/150)x1.92)+1 = 14,98 damage every 0.9 seconds
These calculations are with raid dmg moves, not pvp moves, those have less power, so difference is smaller, but also different multipliers.
so the difference between a nundo and a hundo is almost an entire damage per second.
Heck, even using a STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) move vs different typing will impact the dmg more than the difference between 0 and 15IV
So people would rather sit on a bad fighting team than level up any machamp they find for ~1DPS difference, but in the meantime use pokemon that do a LOT less dmg because they have lower base dmg of have half the TDO (damage a pokemon can do before fainting).
Bringing 6 nundo machamps to a raid will do more damage than 1 hundo machamp (or none because you're waiting on one) and 5 hitmonchans.
There is a difference ofcourse, but it does not matter in raids, especially since you've probably thrown away loads of 15 atk iv pokemon because of their sub 10 IV health (making them 2 star), which does not matter in raids either.
In high lvl pvp it WILL make a difference, but not if your pokemon is not maxed, or has two charged moves, or the right move set, you don't know when to use shields or what team comps are relevant, when to swap, or even don't know type matchups. I don't know you, but if you're asking me if this 93 IV swinub is worth keeping, I assume you don't know all of the above.
And that is exactly the problem, it's a min/maxing thing, the last step in the chain.
By all means keep collecting perfect IV pokemon as a long term goal! But don't make it your only goal, it's a long term plan, you can't force it. Don't let it ruin your game, or hold you back from enjoying evolving a pokemon you love.
If you ever catch a 4* you'll have another goal of maxing that one as well, and it will add longevity to the game and your collecting hobby.
I just hate seeing people worried so much about those damned stars, and it ruining their enjoyment of the game because of something that does not matter for them.
Worst of all, pumping al their stardust and candy in a lvl 5 pokemon because it has near perfect IVs and transferring a 2 star weather boosted max level catch.
Let me know what you think, and if you thought IVs had a bigger impact.
If there is anything incorrect in my post, please comment and I will edit.
edit: I'm speaking for this game only, not the other pokemon games (it's different there) as well as from a combat perspective, not a collector's perspective. Please keep in mind
