Fortran

Hi there, is it wise to learn fortran as my first programming language in 2024 for coding simple programs?

I found out that my name is also the name of a programming language. I thought it would be cool to learn this, also because my parents seem to be real fans of this language. I want to surprise them with my skills. I don’t know anything about coding except some scripting in Roblox (Lua language). How can I learn the fastest. Thank you guys,

I keep seeing memes and stuff about Fortran all over the place. Can someone explain why one might use Fortran or at least explain the joke

Those that work on large Fortran or mixed language projects ( >10k) lines of code, what build system do you use?

Not sure if this is the right place to post, so please redirect me if needed. I want to get my masters soon in pure math which will require programming knowledge. I took a semester of a C++ course in undergrad and did well enough. I've seen a few places argue whether C or Fortran is better and the courses I'm looking at require working knowledge of either language. I'm starting at essentially no knowledge and want to learn one or the other before I start applying for grad school. All this to say I'm not sure which language is actually better for higher level calculations or if it even matters. Anyone know which I should pick or if it matters at all?

EDIT: I should mention I haven't seen a straight answer either way yet.

Hello to everyone. I'm new in the world of programming CFD, and i was wondering why nowadays fortran is still used to program in CFD. I see on the web that there are high-order libraries (such as FLEXI, HORSE3D) that are written in fortran and not in C++.

Generally speaking, C++ allows you to be more flexible since is based on the OOP but on the other hand someone suggest that fortran is faster.

Have you some idea about that?

My son(14) suddenly has shown an interest in learning Fortran, he has been obsessed with the idea this last week. What are the best resources for him to learn? I do not know much about programming myself. Thank you for pointing us in the right direction

Basically I am a cs major student, recently started learning programming, did C , C++ and JavaScript till now , and implemented those . Recently I come to know about fortran. I am pretty much curious about it , but I noticed that it's rarely used this days . Is it still worth it to learn fortran in 2k24 ?

I bought a book on Fortran to teach myself the language and gain a new skill but even though I have a Pi 4 4gb I have no clue if I can compile Fortran on it or not.

Point: Practice for creating a largely scaled down version of flight controller software that...I've googled and what not to discover Fortran and Ada are two commonly used languages so I thought I'd start with Fortran. I'm learning DiffEq and LinAlg right now at my own pace with a FT job so I'm taking things as best I can fit into my schedule. Figure it'd be good to know for getting a job at Maxar Tech. or SpaceX to work on helping with scientific satellites/telescopes and spaceships.
