New Rule for Posts: Name of the Series/Media Must be in the Title of the Post

What can and (definetly can't) be posted on the sub :)
MOD

Users have been asking and complaining about the "vagueness" of the topics that are or aren't allowed in the subreddit, and some requesting for a clarification.

So the mod team will attempt to delineate some thread topics and what is and isn't allowed.

Backstory:

CharacterRant has its origins in the Battleboarding community WhoWouldWin (r/whowouldwin), created to accommodate threads that went beyond a simple hypothetical X vs. Y battle. Per our (very old) sub description:

This is a sub inspired by r/whowouldwin. There have been countless meta posts complaining about characters or explanations as to why X beats, and so on. So the purpose of this sub is to allow those who want to rant about a character or explain why X beats Y and so on.

However, as early as 2015, we were already getting threads ranting about the quality of specific series, complaining about characterization, and just general shittery not all that related to "who would win: 10 million bees vs 1 lion".

So, per Post Rules 1 in the sidebar:

Thread Topics: You may talk about why you like or dislike a specific character, why you think a specific character is overestimated or underestimated. You may talk about and clear up any misconceptions you've seen about a specific character. You may talk about a fictional event that has happened, or a concept such as ki, chakra, or speedforce.

Well that's certainly kinda vague isn't it?

So what can and can't be posted in CharacterRant?

Allowed:

  • Battleboarding in general (with two exceptions down below)

  • Explanations, rants, and complaints on, and about: characters, characterization, character development, a character's feats, plot points, fictional concepts, fictional events, tropes, inaccuracies in fiction, and the power scaling of a series.

  • Non-fiction content is fine as long as it's somehow relevant to the elements above, such as: analysis and explanations on wars, history and/or geopolitics; complaints on the perception of historical events by the general media or the average person; explanation on what nation would win what war or conflict.

Not allowed:

  • he 2 Battleboarding exceptions: 1) hypothetical scenarios, as those belong in r/whowouldwin;2) pure calculations - you can post a "fancalc" on a feat or an event as long as you also bring forth a bare minimum amount of discussion accompanying it; no "I calced this feat at 10 trillion gigajoules, thanks bye" posts.

  • Explanations, rants and complaints on the technical aspect of production of content - e.g. complaints on how a movie literally looks too dark; the CGI on a TV show looks unfinished; a manga has too many lines; a book uses shitty quality paper; a comic book uses an incomprehensible font; a song has good guitars.

  • Politics that somehow don't relate to the elements listed in the "Allowed" section - e.g. this country's policies are bad, this government is good, this politician is dumb.

  • Entertainment topics that somehow don't relate to the elements listed in the "Allowed" section - e.g. this celebrity has bad opinions, this actor is a good/bad actor, this actor got cast for this movie, this writer has dumb takes on Twitter, social media is bad.

ADDENDUM -

  • Politics in relation to a series and discussion of those politics is fine, however political discussion outside said series or how it relates to said series is a no, no baggins'

  • Overly broad takes on tropes and and genres? Henceforth not allowed. If you are to discuss the genre or trope you MUST have specifics for your rant to be focused on. (Specific Characters or specific stories)

  • Rants about Fandom or fans in general? Also being sent to the shadow realm, you are not discussing characters or anything relevant once more to the purpose of this sub

  • A friendly reminder that this sub is for rants about characters and series, things that have specificity to them and not broad and vague annoyances that you thought up in the shower.

And our already established rules:

  • No low effort threads.

  • No threads in response to topics from other threads, and avoid posting threads on currently over-posted topics - e.g. saw 2 rants about the same subject in the last 24 hours, avoid posting one more.

  • No threads solely to ask questions.

  • No unapproved meta posts. Ask mods first and we'll likely say yes.

PS: We can't ban people or remove comments for being inoffensively dumb. Stop reporting opinions or people you disagree with as "dumb" or "misinformation".

Why was my thread removed? What counts as a Low Effort Thread?

  • If you posted something and it was removed, these are the two most likely options:**

  • Your account is too new or inactive to bypass our filters

  • Your post was low effort

"Low effort" is somewhat subjective, but you know it when you see it. Only a few sentences in the body, simply linking a picture/article/video, the post is just some stupid joke, etc. They aren't all that bad, and that's where it gets blurry. Maybe we felt your post was just a bit too short, or it didn't really "say" anything. If that's the case and you wish to argue your position, message us and we might change our minds and approve your post.

What counts as a Response thread or an over-posted topic? Why do we get megathreads?

  1. A response thread is pretty self explanatory. Does your thread only exist because someone else made a thread or a comment you want to respond to? Does your thread explicitly link to another thread, or say "there was this recent rant that said X"? These are response threads. Now obviously the Mod Team isn't saying that no one can ever talk about any other thread that's been posted here, just use common sense and give it a few days.

  2. Sometimes there are so many threads being posted here about the same subject that the Mod Team reserves the right to temporarily restrict said topic or a portion of it. This usually happens after a large series ends, or controversial material comes out (i.e The AOT ban after the penultimate chapter, or the Dragon Ball ban after years of bullshittery on every DB thread). Before any temporary ban happens, there will always be a Megathread on the subject explaining why it has been temporarily kiboshed and for roughly how long. Obviously there can be no threads posted outside the Megathread when a restriction is in place, and the Megathread stays open for discussions.

Reposts

  • A "repost" is when you make a thread with the same opinion, covering the exact same topic, of another rant that has been posted here by anyone, including yourself.

  • ✅ It's allowed when the original post has less than 100 upvotes or has been archived (it's 6 months or older)

  • ❌ It's not allowed when the original post has more than 100 upvotes and hasn't been archived yet (posted less than 6 months ago)

Music

Users have been asking about it so we made it official.

To avoid us becoming a subreddit to discuss new songs and albums, which there are plenty of, we limit ourselves regarding music:

  • Allowed: analyzing the storytelling aspect of the song/album, a character from the music, or the album's fictional themes and events.

  • Not allowed: analyzing the technical and sonical aspects of the song/album and/or the quality of the lyricism, of the singing or of the sound/production/instrumentals.

TL;DR: you can post a lot of stuff but try posting good rants please

-Yours truly, the beautiful mod team

I despise series where the author doesn't just make live hard for the MC. But makes everyone and everything mean to him and it result in the story having zero respect for the MC and only them. Anime & Manga

Bit of a weird topic but one im sure many thought about and for me i must complain.( doesn't involve all all anime but a sizable amount that it has become common.)

I say Anime and Manga but this also includes video game by japan in some cases.

(I also know this does apply to comic books too. Spiderman eh)

Look the life of a protagonist is hard. If nothing bad or unenventfful happens to them it gets boring. Sure it depends by genre or story but you get my point.

Now the struggles of a protagonist is meant to be compelling. Lets take the action drama series as a major exemple

Or rather the shonen or something close to it genre. You know the Protagonist gonna face many many foes usually in very tough fights were he gets sent to the hospital or something. Thats his main struggle and im fine with it.

Alas so many many many authors for the most stupid or ridiculous reasons seems to think that to keep them humble or some shit or comedic  purpose or anything else decide to get insulting.

Resulting in what i feel like is the protagonist going through shit by cast members who are not villains (important distinction. If a villain cause grief im 100 % fine with it. Its when non villains cause so much... lets say... trouble to them that im not fine and it makes me and others hate them more than the villains themselves. Weird huh? Especiallyif its the suppose love interest. Usually cause karma never hits half as hard on them.)

It leads to in my eyes a lack of appréciation towards the MC who works his ass off despite what others do to them. And honestly not coming off as funny as the author thinks it is. Hell despite some in universe justifications truth is its usually due to the author bias of other characters or many many other things(trend going, cliche use without charms...)

I shall make another post about appreciation another time.

More to the point it just downgrades the protagonist we are suppose to root for and treats him with disrespect. As if it use them to make fun of them abd just them. Usually no one else in the cast gets shit as hard as the MC in those cases. You usually recognize it base on how many Characters and how much they treat the MC without real respect or appreciation in contrast to others.

(Un)Suprisingly. Harem or story with a singular important guy and just Girls more or less tends to fall into that.

Which really makes you wonder why be part of a harem if your a joke and the girls keep treating you badly all the time and you do all their shit and they rarely if ever do the same for you.

More on that in another post.

Anyways lets us begin with 4 exemples. Two that can be debatable or not. One that i really HATED the series and one that is non action.

Exemple 1: Kamijou Touma

Now Touma is literally stated to have no luck cause of his imagine breaker. Now that would already be bad in terms of all the villains and dangerous situation he faces.

Alas due to the bad luck the author sure loves to embarass Touma all the fricking time. Even by standards of this type of thing. He gets biten by Index at the slightest provocation, Mikoto constantly zaps him and never actually calls him by his actual name(must i remindthose two are his closest female comrades. ) And thats not getting onto pretty much every other... bad stuff(minor or not) accusation and whatnot constantly throw towards him.

Needless to say its for me(and quite a few others) one hard reason to enjoy the story as it constantly makes fun of the MC in mean spirited ways ( other suffers but nowhere near the severity or frequencies of Touma) add to him constantly getting mocked by others. Oh and his memory loss too.

Exemple 2: Ragna the bloodedge

The blazblue world sucks hard. You get the tyranical NOL their opposite sector 7 who are no better all manipulated by one of fiction most evil character ever.

Life ins't easy for everyone in this world. But even by blazblue standards or anything really Ragna life just suuuuucccckkkksssss. Holy shit.

Now his awful backstory aside. Tbf a lot of Ragna issue are on him and his bad attitude and that hes a terrorist so he has a pretty awful reputation.

That said he really gets dunked on by people worse than him(villains or not, blazblue has few if any good morally characters, ). Like really badly, with all the constant insults by the likes of Rachel. Being force into help by Kokonoe in CP threatening him with a bomb. Platinum calling him a Pedo. Kagura hitting him due to some obvious misunderstanding that he didn't start. Tsubaki believing him to be the root of all evil till the very end. Jin wanting to kill him out of obsession ( power of order too) and jin being highly regarded by everyone overall as the hero of ikaruga and mr "hero".

And etc... basically he gets shit by everyone (save a few) who are all assholes(blazblue full of them) and while ragna not the nicest guy ever and does deserve some karma from his frankly awful deeds it really comes off later as too mean spirited by the hands of worse people who themselves dont suffer half as much as him and his story ends very bittersweet with him cease to be and everyone forgeting him despite his good deeds.

So yeah pretty bad. Unless you buy into the theory that Ragna life sucks bad cause its karma of his existence as the black beast destroying half the world in the past.... or futur.... i dunno its blazblue.

Exemple 3:.....iska from.... kimisen😤😤

Oh boy. I did months ago a 70000 character post about how much i DESPISE everything about this LN( anime S2 coming out soon...) cause its personaly the antithesis of everything i like and its a honest to god piece of trash work in the same tier as current RWBY.

Its a LN. So automatically isnt not what you expected to be amazing or something but its gets genuiely awful and simply not fun or charming.

Granted i am to blame for having high standards or acceptable ones. But thats no reason for the author to make such a dissapointing show and hyoe up for naught and butchering promises.

So this MC case(hes one of the blandest ever. A kirito clone with honestly little  emoting. Wtf is japan obsession with them?) The disrespect is extremely prélevant when put into comparaison with the obvious story bias of the fl(and her shitty maid and honestly her entire faction). See it promise that its a story of "equals" when it is anything but feeling like its equal.

He spend a year in prison. Always gets into trouble. The FL and her shit maid drugs him on neutral grounds and kidnap him and the maid tries to kill him when hes in cuffs. Then the fl has the galls to tame advantage of his kindness( its not kindness but plot tbh) to make it that he saves her shitty maid life.

And there is not once any true gratitude or apologies or respect from the fl or the maid. Sure they are on opposite sides but as the work goes on you realise that the author has a obvious favoritisme for his f***** magic casters( who are all girls) and the plot become them with the suppose MC as a side character.

The MC is a criminal out of jail for saving someone and has a bad reputation (not that its actually ever go into details cause the author is a talentless hack with no writting true skills) he gets teased or insulted and look down by so many others. The fl maid( who has too much screentime) constantly hates his guts, insult him with the worst typical insult mean girls in anime say to make character.

That. Are. Somehow. Inexplicably. Meant. To. Be. Funny.

Like calling him a dog. Accusing him of being a non human being at the slightest misunderstanding. Never calling him by name. Always saying things such as him to die or get kill. And Always blaming him for things that are her own fault.

Im not exagerating btw. This is all true. And Somehow the author underdeveloped mind think we are meant to like her even from just a neutral standpoint. Author is a... dumbass to put it simply. Incapable of regonizing that people hate her and that he whent too far.

He constantly gets into the FL troubles ( either by herself or others) and never once does he retaliate or gets fed up with this shit.

The FL? She a princess who so powerful she never loses fights with ease. Is never as mocked or insulted or gets put through the humilation she did to the ML and she steal all the big important plot focus. Her maid isn't better as not once does the MC or his friends ever starts insulting and calling her bitchiness. Now the story freely allows them to do awful things to the ml side with zero répercussions and saying awful things while never suffering any equal disrespect or pain in turn.

She one of the worst Mary sue i ever saw. And the story constant claim of it being a tale of equal is a utter LIE.

When she does something bad to the ml its whitewash. Never is there a moment where she or her maid fully pay at the ml hand for all the shit they did to him( and the zero thing he does to them, hell he actually helps them more and its never acknowledge by them.)

There is no equal suffering amongst them. Its a story that SAYS its about two sides but is actually about ONE side and the other is just there to take the heat and be side charactered.

Im gonna stop now. God this is a piece of shit series and the author a piece of storytelling trash unaware of his own stinks.

Exemple 4: Kosei from your lie in april.

Pretty quick this one. Kosei has a frankly horrific past and its awful. Its not a nice thing and makes us sympathic to him. Yet the story just seems to think that causing a already trouble kid some more anguish is comedic.

You know what im talking about with the constant physical abuse kaori and tsubaki do to him.

It turn off a lotta people at the cringe mood and atmosphere which is understandable.

In conclusion. I use to be indifferent but now no. I do not. It disgust me that a author doesn't just make the MC live hell but makes them lack self respect and have everyone. Even the suppose good characters crap on and on on them without stop. And in many cases no retaliation or karma for reasons( though i could guess in many cases  its a result of not wanting the ML to look bad hitting or causing harm to girls.... yet they are allowed to cause them grief??? Fuck double standards on its fucking ass).

It makes the author being mean or in cases awful with no concept of moderation or understanding of its audience. He gives no self respect to the MC. Refuse to make them flip off believing that simply getting walk over and never being feed up with this BS and other people who never showns appreciation or gratitude in proper is "good". Making them whimps, spineless incapable of standing up for themselves for everyone shitty treatments of them.

These author and their story disgust me on every level.

And i know that lots of my exemple are full of double standards. That cause its one of the easiest way to spot a work that has zero true respect for its MC or ML.

... i like when everyone in a story (or the main cast) suffers equally.  A suffering shared i call it. It prevent in my eyes from cases like these and makes it satisfying that assholes/bitches who cause the MC/ML grief of very bad quality suffers in turn

Especially if its a FL that never goes through even half of what the ML whent. By others or by her own hands

Call me a sadist or something but in those cases it would be Cathartic as hell. Its equal and fair in its unfairness. And whi knows. Maybe ill give the cast a actual understanding of what the MC goes through and improve their shit attitude.
