What is your use case for space? by FrostyAcanthocephala in space

[–]siggias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large object manufacturing.

We often forget how prohibitive it is to manufacture in gravity. Imagine assembling a dreadnought in space vs on earth. Imagine not having to deal with size constraints due to road transport. Imagine how much easier it would be to maneuver parts exceeding 10 1000's of tons.

And metallurgy in vacuum has some inherent benefits. Oxygen is metals greatest enemy. When welding on earth, usually a blanket of gas like argon is needed to shield the weld. The gas is often the most expensive part of welding.

Mining in space is good and all but how do you get profitable amounts of ore down from space? by Korenaut in space

[–]siggias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kg of a metal like iron on earth is maybe 7-8 usd or less.

A kg of anything in orbit has a base cost of thousands of dollars.

So mining something in space and bringing it down to earth is a bit like moving sand to the Sahara to sell.

Ukraine passes bill banning LGBTQ+ hate speech in media by KC_8580 in worldnews

Allegedly it has been found that some priest of the Russian orthodox church in ukraine were working directly for the FSB. They helped gather information prior to the invasion, separating people into groups depending on likelyhood of collaboration. This information was used to make lists of unwanted individuals, slated for execution when the russians had taken over (which was supposed to happen 3 days after the invasion started.)

These are catholic priests that take confessions and are generally in a favorable position to extract information.

This is the moment I remember as well. If he ha fled, the war probably would have gone on a very different route.

This is when I knew Ukraine would not buckle. Ukraine would stand and fight.
