**A place to discuss published speculative fiction**—novels, short stories, comics, and more. Not sure if a book counts? Then post it! Science Fiction, Fantasy, Alt. History, Postmodern Lit., and more are all welcome here. **The key is that it be speculative, not that it fit some arbitrary genre guidelines**. Any sort of link or text post is welcome as long as it is about printed / text / static SF material.
I have found this list of the top science fiction novels.
The top books on there are:
-
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
-
Nineteen Eighty-Four
-
Dune
-
Fahrenheit 451
-
Ender's Game
For me, Dune should be number 1!
Science Fiction, or Speculative Fiction if you prefer. Fantasy too. Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Dick, Heinlein and other SF books. SF movies and TV shows. Fantasy stuff like Tolkien and Game of Thrones. Laser guns, space ships, and time travel. etc. Star Trek, Battlestar, Star Wars, etc.

It's just exactly what the title says. What would a science fiction book that is specifically tailored to your tastes look like? Which specific elements do you like the most or do you want to see more of?
It could be something more general like subgenres, themes and structure, or something more speicifc like character tropes, specific technologies, settings, subplots, aesthetic, etc. While I wrote "novel", it can also be just a short story or an anthology or something else entirely. Combine all your favorite elements into one book and tell us what is looks like.
For me, it would be a sprawling space opera with grandiose scope, heavy alien presence, diverse planets (no one government/species per one planet) and philosophical themes. Also an emphasis on biopunk themes like biologically altered/engineered experiments and monsters or just speculative biology in general. Complex characters would also be nice.
So, yeah, please describe your ideal sci-fi book.

What book do you recommend? What book would be a good entry way into understanding what the genre can offer?

Looking for recommendations for my bf and I to read together.
The two books I adore: Hitchikers Guide and Enders Game.

Hey all, I have been working on writing a Malayalam Science fiction novel during my free time. It is half way, and could take another year to complete. Just wanted to connect with anyone who is enthusiastic about this genre 🙂. Also, curious to knowwhether there are other writers in this subreddit.

They always say read in the genre you write in. So I was wondering what the go-to best science fiction novel was to read?

A long time ago (late 80's, possibly) I borrowed a book from the library that I'd like to find again. I've searched a few times in the past but never had any success, because I remember so few details.
The protagonist of the story was a bounty hunter or perhaps a former soldier. He had some kind of augmentation that linked him to his pistol, and when he got nervous or stressed, the interface to the gun in his palm would itch. Biting down on his jaw caused a "spiderweb" effect in his vision that acted as a targeting interface for the pistol. I remember almost nothing about the plot, but I have a feeling that a lot of the story involved him investigating something about his own past.
My brain keeps trying to tell me it was written by Frederik Pohl or Stanislaw Lem, but I've skimmed through their catalog and nothing immediately jumps out at me.

Welcome to Chattanooga's very own subreddit! We also welcome anyone from the greater Chattanooga area!
I'm absolutely rubbish with "official" marketing, I really need to be reaching out to local news publications with press releases, but I figured I'd give this subreddit a heads-up that my husband, local author Devon Eriksen, has published his debut character-driven hard scifi novel Theft of Fire, to much acclaim
It's all kinda overwhelming, people are sincerely comparing him to Heinlein and Weir and S.A Corey and Pierce Brown and more. He put a lot of work into his book, so seeing it actually get some attention is beyond gratifying.
It isn't kept on bookstore shelves (yet!) but you can order copies Winder Binder (heads up: go with paperback, I don't think hardcover will arrive before Christmas) or the (if you don't care about Supporting Local... which you should!). Or you can order it from B&N!
Some signed copies will also be available on the "Local Author" shelf at Locals Coffee in East Ridge, but not until December 20th or so
I don't know what to say. I have a million things I need to do right now. I'm super excited and overwhelmed. It's a freaking amazing science fiction book (feel free to check the ; I'm biased, but not wrong!)
PS it's a great gift for scifi readers; it was published less than a month ago, which means even avid readers probably haven't read it... so... pick up a copy or three of Theft of Fire!
Oh! And here he is,
Who knows what sick, twisted thoughts lurks in the hearts of worldbuilders? Worldjerking knows! A warning to all travellers: here be splitting rivers, elven subraces, original characters (do not steal), and magic systems... so many magic systems. Turn back now, or may God have mercy on your soul. tl;dr: this sub is for satirizing trends in the hobby of worldbuilding, as well as those within the broader speculative fiction community.
Everything pertaining to the technological singularity and related topics, e.g. AI, human enhancement, etc.
