Rewatching "Second Place," and realizing I missed a clear turning point for Brennan

I originally thought that Brennan spent the episode struggling between sticking to his values and always doing his best, and his competitive nature that wants to always win. But upon re-watch, I realized that there is an actual very clear point in which Brennan switches from "I will do my best," to "I will win this format."

It's when Oscar wins the limited edition LOTR box set, and admits to never reading the books or watching the movies. It is then that Brennan decides that Oscar cannot win the episode, and the very next round, he scores his first points of the game, followed shortly by his psychological warfare during the "Donald Trump," impression round. Brennan is then all-in on "winning" for the rest of the episode.

This is further reflected when Brennan decides to win the Dance game with Ally and sabotage Oscar, which I thought may have been just him either being strategic or choosing his close friend, but really, it's about punishing the heathen.

On Dropout TV and paying for content

Let me start out by saying this: I pay for Dropout and have absolutely no intention of changing that anytime soon. Or anytime later to be fair.

Hi. I'm a pirate. I've pirated so much content in the last 30+ years it's mind-boggling. I had cable back in the day, and I was on board with Tivo from jumpstreet: I owned the very first box they made and upgraded all along the way. I've given networks and cable companies and streaming companies literally tens of thousands of dollars. I'll never do the math but it would not surprise me if my total expenditure on media in all forms is 6 figures. I pirate fucking everything these days. Hell I pirate from streaming services I still pay for because my Plex server is curated to me, and I like a one-stop-shop. I'm pirating eleventy-three quadrillion terabytes from Netflix as I type these words. And fuck all your ads, streaming services. Just fuck off.

But man, Dropout though. I actually did pirate some shows when we discovered it. Then I found out they had an app for Firetv. Then I saw the subscription fee, plus all the back catalog and was like "My time is worth way more than they want to charge. The service is worth more than they want to charge!" And I subbed. Every month I look at the streaming fees for Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Max, etc. increasing and every month I make plans to free myself from what has become cable tv-level pricing if you want everything. You know what's never on the chopping block? Like, never? Dropout.

The value is incredible. In these trying times (to paraphrase Demi on Smartypants, whenever you're reading this, I mean now), Dropout makes me laugh. I forget about the fucking horror-show the world is becoming for a little while. There's a rich back catalog. There's a show for most every niche you might like. And that low, low price for all the value you get...the price is right, bitch! Dropout TV is high quality content at a price that makes it affordable for most anyone. If I ever get the feeling that like "Well I watched it all, may as well unsub for awhile" Along comes VIP. Or Smartypants. Or another Dimension 20. Or a new season of Game Changer. Um, Actually exists to tickle that nerd bone. And soon Make Some Noise is back and the lineup looks incredible.

Sam...you have my sub. And my sword. I know. Coming from a self-described pirate that may not mean much to a content creator. But Dropout is exactly the kind of service that stops pirates. It's high quality and easy on the wallet.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk or whatever 🤣

You are seen, Grant

Early in the third episode of Total Forgiveness, Ally and Adam tease Grant for being an “indoor cat.” Grant comments affirmatively: “I like a nice concierge.” Ally reacts to this as “truly the grossest thing you’ve ever said.”

BUT

I think I stand a good chance of being the only person on the planet who immediately recognized that line as a quote from The West Wing, of which Grant is a notorious superfan. (Season 4, episode 9, “Swiss Diplomacy,” for the curious.)

As a precocious teenager, I watched TWW obsessively and repeatedly. Not coincidentally, I was also the kind of social homunculus who would pepper casual conversations with quotes and references that were not necessarily shared by the people I was talking to. I definitely dropped hundreds of pearls of Aaron Sorkin dialogue onto the heads of unsuspecting victims, and I was well accustomed to people looking at me like an alien visitor to Earth in response.

So this is just to say: I see you, Grant O’Brien, and you are not alone.

(Except maybe underneath the supermarket in Brooklyn.)

Ross Appreciation Post

I just recently got my Dropout subscription after months of devouring everything they posted on social media. I had seen almost nothing with Ross and was absolutely not prepared for how good he is. The man can do Shakespearian improv, music improv, voices, accents. His VIP episode has some moments where he gets in the zone and that man can just keep going with intensity. A lot of improvisers keep things short but he and Brennan both have a crazy ability to improvise full speeches at the drop of a hat. Anyway, since joining the sub I haven't seen his name much and its a shame. One of the most underrated performers IMO.

What in the fresh hell is this UI update?!?!

This is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. I do not need a giant block on the right of my screen with the title in giant bolt text. I do not need my recommended videos UNDER the video I am currently watching. I do not need to have comments up like it's a damn livestream chat!

Edit: Thanks for people posting scipts/styles, the site is now back to looking decent. It's not perfect, but frankly compared to what I just saw, I can deal with it. What seems to be the absolute best fix is a combination of tamper monkey and this style https://userstyles.world/style/6944/old-youtube-layout-in-2021-2022 - which can be used with the browser addon stylus

Twitch streamer leaks private information about me

hello i don't know if I'm in the right place here. But a friend of mine is a twitch streamer with an audience of 20-30 people. Yesterday i found out that he regularly leaks private stories about me (doesn't say my name, but when someone in the chat says it he just nods). i asked him to stop but he insists that he does not say my name specifically and i cant do nothing about it. I feel bullied and harassed and get many messages because of this. Is there a way i can report him?

Best President/Vice President candidate combo from the Dropout universe?

I previously made a comment espousing a Reich / Lee Mulligan ticket for 2028, and I while I think that's a pretty solid ticket, I feel like there's a lot more to explore here. Who from the Dropout universe would make your favorite President/VP ticket? Bonus points for theorizing that ticket's cabinet members (ex: Katie Marovitch for Secretary of Education).
