The squabbles and tension they had were based on true feelings and critiques of Rhod weren't all in jest. Sometimes I forget that comedians are just people too.
The contestants did a good job of not taking everything too seriously and the show's producers did a good job of cutting around it.
Also, he felt that the format of the show was not his style and he wasn't fit for it which made him do tasks the way he did, which he didn't like.

Edit 2: I don't mean he hated it. Just that he didn't enjoy it like most other contestants. I agree that he might be playing the bad things up for comedic purposes in the article and it's hard to get that across in writing but he can't be making the whole thing up. It has to be based on something. And you can clearly see that James was genuinely frustrated with Rhod.
Also, multiple times Rhod has supported the other contestants task efforts like Phil's box tower building and James hulaing, only for them to turn around and criticize Rhod's attempt at the tasks. Even though it's played off as funny, it seems like there were real feelings behind it.
