Prepare Currents for Spaces migration

This article is for people who manage Google services or devices for a company, school, or group. If you're using a personal (@gmail.com) account, go to the Google Account Help Center.

We’re migrating Currents data into Spaces. Data from your organization will be migrated to Spaces, with some exceptions. As an admin for Google Currents, you are the point of contact for your organization as we migrate your data to Spaces.

How will the Currents automated migration work?

The process for migrating your data from Currents to Spaces is handled automatically. You should pre-configure your Chat settings for Spaces if your domain has external users. You can also download data that won’t be migrated using Google Takeout. To learn more about what data is migrated, please read Currents to Spaces feature migration.

Once your migration status is confirmed, we’ll send you the date the automated migration will begin in early 2023, at least 30 days from migration start. Currents will also display a banner with your migration date. When the domain migration process has begun, Currents will be unavailable for use in your domain for up to 48 hours.

Currents admin console settings in Spaces

As a Workspace administrator, there are settings you can configure in Chat before the migration. For example, if guest access is disabled for your domain under Chat but not Currents, external members from a community will not have access to the newly created space post-migration. Spaces settings are found under the Google Chat admin console settings menu.

Leave Currents turned on

If you turn off Currents, you can't migrate data. If you delete Currents profiles or communities, they won't be migrated.

Prepare Chat for migration

Review the following Chat prerequisites before migration:

  • Verify that your domain has access to Chat for the entire migration. If Chat is disabled during migration, the data transfer process will fail. To turn Chat on, read Set up Chat for your organization.
  • Verify that Allow users to install Chat apps is turned on. For details, see Allow users to install Chat apps.
  • Check your Google Vault retention settings and choose indefinite retention for Chat.

Turn on Spaces for external guests

If you have a shared community, or a community with external users, you must turn on external access in Google Chat to keep those external guests. To ensure Spaces is open for external guests:

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Appsand thenGoogle Workspaceand thenGoogle Chat.
  3. Click External Chat Settings.
  4. Under Chat externally click Edit.
  5. Click On.
  6. (Optional) Click Only allow this for allowlisted domains.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click External Spaces
  9. Click On.
  10. (Optional) Click Only allow this for allowlisted domains.
  11. Click Save.

Where can I access Currents data post-migration?

After migration, you’ll be able to download Currents data from your domain with Google Takeout under the Currents or Chat options. We recommend you download any analytics data you want to keep as well as any posts created prior to July 2020, as these will not be migrated. Data will remain in the Currents section of Takeout for at least 30 days, after which it can only be accessed in the Chat section.
