What is something you think is pretty important about Pittsburgh, but is not openly discussed?

For example, a few submissions:

-Cadillac has used Pittsburgh as a testing ground for their vehicles for many decades, due to the unique roads and poor road quality. You can still see their camouflaged vehicles on our streets to this day. This was way before Uber and the self-driving companies were even around.

-Alcoa has two HQ buildings in Pittsburgh (one former), but the executive team are headquartered at 390 Park Avenue in NYC.

-Kraft Heinz has limited people still working in Pittsburgh, with 27 offices worldwide. Most of their ketchup is made in Fremont, Oh or Muscatine, Iowa. The Heinz single-serve packets are an independent subsidy stationed in Jacksonville.

-Bob Marley's last concert was at the now Benedum.

-The (AFL) American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations is the largest federation of unions in the United States and was founded in Pittsburgh.

New Podcast on the Congress of Industrial Organizations

Just wanted to let people know about this. Those with some familiarity with American history will know that the 1930s and 40s were the most economically progressive period in U.S. history and this podcast focuses on the role of the CIO in making that happen by organizing workers. I think it will probably end up being a good resource for those of us wanting to move the needle in a more economically progressive direction. I really look forward to learning about this group that actually advanced the cause of the working class in the U.S.

Librarians who are unionized: Would you recommend unionizing to other librarians? Why or why not?

Unions are becoming more popular in the USA. The number of people who view unions favorably is on a clear upward trend: up from 68% last year, 64% before the pandemic and 52% a decade ago. This year's rate ties with that of 1965 when unions were much more powerful and popular (source). The most recent data (2020) from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) shows that approximately 26 percent of library workers are union members, a percentage that's remained flat since 2017 (Source.

As a librarian or library worker, are you unionized? Would you recommend unionizing to other librarians (in other words: are you happy with being unionized or do you wish you werent?) Why or why not?
