Like so many other families in Appalachia, I’ve lost family and friends to poverty and the healthcare crisis. I’ve watched as family members, neighbors and community members suffered with addiction, cancer, and underserved health issues.

Our ancestors started the labor movement deep in the coalfields decades ago, yet we are still fighting to end the plight of poverty. We deserve a fair and diverse economy, a livable wage, healthcare, a clean environment for our children, education and the promise for a bright future.

It’s time for West Virginians to have a voice in Washington, D.C. The industrial revolution was built on the backs of coal miners, their families, and our communities. We’ve provided power to America and now, it’s time to empower ourselves.

I think we do this by focusing on common values. Everyone wants to make a decent living and be able to feed their family. Every mother wants her children to have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe. Every teacher wants to be paid fairly and for each of her students to have the same opportunities, regardless of where they live.

This campaign is about lifting up the people of West Virginia who have long been pushed aside and deemed collateral damage to economic growth and corporate irresponsibility.

I know West Virginia can be a leader in the transition to a renewable energy economy that will not only provide jobs but will result in healthier living and working conditions for many current coal industry workers.

I support:

• Medicare for All

• Federal funding for addiction recovery and prevention programs

• The Reclaim Act

• Free public pre-school and college/trade school

• Strengthening unions
