What's So Bad About John Bel Edwards?

This is an honest question. For context, I'm a No-Party, left-leaning [with a sprinkle of conservatism] Christian. I'm trying to learn more about the facts and understand why half the state loathes him. John Bel Edwards is the most Republican Democrat out there, in my opinion. So what's the issue? I'd truly like to better understand what the criticisms of him are, aside from having a D next to his name.

Just curious as to how the people of Louisiana feel about him overall as an outsider looking in. He’ll likely be the last Democrat in elected office the state sees for a long time, but do you think he was able to leave a positive impact on the state as a whole?

Apparently, it's true. Why, in the name of all things holy, would he do something like that? What am I missing?

And if it's true, will this bite Democrats on the ass when one or more of them go back to doing what they did in the first place?
