so the house of representatives just passed a bill that will now move to the senate to BAN tik tok completely in the united states and they are expected to argue that “national security risks” outweigh the freedom of speech and first amendment rights. biden has already said that if it gets to him, he will sign it. whether or not you use the app…….this is something to be worried about

before u have the kneejerk reaction of “good I hate tt anyways” or “maybe ppl will go outside” that’s not what this is about! the government wants to remove an entire app with over 170 million american users (who in large have used it as a platform to build community, consume and spread world news, advocate, organize), and try to force people back to us based apps like meta and google. please think about the implications. please think about what else they could potentially do if they get away with this. this could very well set a precedent for free speech & constitutional rights as well know it, and it is imperative we are on the right side of it

By the way, the actual language of the bill would allow them to ban any website or internet hosted app from a “foreign adversary”, as described in the vaguest possible terms. This isn’t about tiktok and will not stop at tiktok.

now, THIS is the “tiktok ban bad” post to reblog.

So I found Aaron Bushnell’s reddit and went through his comments/posts. That young man was well read and stable as they can be. Nothing in his writings pointed to someone who was “unstable” or “brainwashed”.

He held leftist and anarchist ideals. He belong to the ACAB subreddit. He recognized the evil of the US Military even though he himself was a part of it. He hated TERFS and called out fatphobia. He understood the dangers of white supremecy and the evils of capitalism.

He had a cat. He liked the show fleabag and played elden ring.

Apparently in his will he wants to leave any money in his name to palestinian relief funds. He was trying to find a new owner for his cat.

Rest in peace Aaron Bushnell. The world won’t forget & we sure as fuck won’t let the media paint you out to be some crazy conspiracy theorist who had no idea what he was doing.

The thing I keep coming back to, with all the *gestures expansively* is that real life doesn’t have peaceful epilogues.

Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I’m sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn’t. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it’s so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn’t put in all that work for nothing, and you aren’t, either. You can’t save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There’s no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.

For 153 days, we’ve seen Palestinians taking care of not only fellow humans by sharing food with each other, helping save people from under the rubble, carrying random bloody strangers to hospitals, and lending a helping hand at any given, but we’ve also seen them, constantly, taking care of animals during the genocide.

In case you lost it - a link to the eSIM donation guide. Even if you feel sick and powerless, you can at least do this. And even if you really, really can’t donate, you can always at least share this and remind others.

the lowest tier, which costs 9 dollars, offers a week of connection while the very next, 16 dollars, will provide a full month of contact with the world to someone who desperately needs it. this is not some idle step. an entire month is a huge length of time for people who are displaced, terrified, and isolated.
