Having a conversation with my college senior has really opened my eyes!!

So, I am a 2024 grad and I have cracked a college placement with a 8 lpa package. Currently, I am doing the intern for the same company from January onwards. On weekend, my clg senior which I generally use to talk with in clg, was in the town, so we decided to catch up. He is working in one of the faang. And man, he literally made me depressed.

So, we were discussing about switches and hikes. And he said, that you should start with a higher package as much as possible. Because your first switch generally happens after 2 years. And you would maximum get a 100-200% hike. And even that when the market is good. So, in general your friends who are joining with a 20 lpa ctc, will easily reach around 25-30 in 2 yrs in the same company, and then if they put a little effort in dsa they can easily bag 50 lpa packages. Whereas for you, you have to work very hard on your dsa skills to get selected and let's say you get selected in Microsoft or some other faang, they will try to lowball you as much as possible. Like they will give you sde-1 even after having a 2 yr workex as your experience is useless for them, and if they pay generally 40-50 lpa for sde-1, they will try to lowball you around 25-30 maximum.

Now, I regret not working hard enough in clg. Should have improved on my cg, should have worked on my dsa more, etc.

So now what's the point of learning anything if we are moving towards AGI?

With ChatGPT 4o and Google's Gemini, what's the point of anything I have done till now. For the first time I'm very anxious about my job amd what will I even be able to achieve in tech.

My current plan is to switch to a business team and start all over again. What are you plans?

[RANT] I am SO f***ing fed up with Indian Corporate life!

We are turning into a mini USA! Most of the Indian companies just want to bend over and get effed in the arse by US companies.

Yes, I'm getting laid off again for the third time! The job I'm in is not a good fit for me. i just took it to pay the bills.

COrporate life in India sucks! Politics and bad projects and boring meetings / scrum calls with less development and more administrative work like filling out effring word documents and excel sheets!

I used to love computers and being on them and creating new softwares. But the corporate life has all but killed my interest in gadgets and computers. And I have been in the field for 16 years now!

Just a rant. Thanks for reading.

I did not get laid off in this recession because i didn't have the job to begin with.

I'm graduating this month with a cs degree, i got no internship offer, no job offer. I have required skills, people who cant code a prime number program in my class got offer letters on god knows what criteria. Majority got non technical position but still like 30% people got technical job role with no skills. They even defend that skills shouldn't be required for job. There haven't been many placement drive this year. Every package was below 4lpa. So I'm just looking for internship or a job here.

Some of my friends changed 5 companies in their 6 years of work experience. Doesn’t this attract scrutiny from HR ? I mean, you spend 2 months in notice period and 2 months in training in new company. So 5 companies is like 20 months of time pass.

Am I the only one who's fed up with all the AI posts everywhere?

I am posting this in this sub, because a majority of "AI Launches" are web apps. And this sub is one of the plenty subs I visit where AI posts will constantly pop up.

Most postings are like

  • I made this new fancy groundbreaking AI app (a ChatGPT prompt wrapper)

  • Will AI take our jobs?? \o/

  • How can I make millions with AI?

  • AI Entrepreneural posts (like I want to market my ChatGPT prompt wrapper)

I mean I can't be the only one who's fed up with that, right?

There should be a subreddit like "AI dev" where they can then post this kind of stuff, so other subs stay clean.

Sorry for that rant, lol.

got an offer from FAANGMULA and I feel like I over prepared

I got an offer last week from a FAANGMULA company. For the sake of privacy I won't go into any more detail about the exact company or questions I was asked. But I've definitely left the experience feeling like there's a real culture of over-preparing for SWE jobs.

I'd never applied/interviewed at a FAANG job, so all I had to go off of was posts on subreddits like this one. I convinced myself that I needed to do 500 LC problems, including all the famous lists and company tagged problems, to succeed. Now I realize that I probably would've passed having just done the Blind 75. Not like I was literally asked Blind 75 questions - actually I was only asked questions I'd never solved (though they used techniques I was familiar with). But doing like 15 topological sort problems for example was probably completely overkill

So for all you out there who don't have hours and hours to commit to preparing for these interviews, take it from me that you might know enough after just 100 or so standard problems.
