Washington, D.C., June 10, 2024 – Today, an eight-member jury in West Palm Beach, Florida, found Chiquita Brands International liable for funding a violent Colombian paramilitary organization, the United Self-defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), that was responsible for major human rights atrocities during the 1990s and 2000s. The weeks-long trial featured testimony from the families of the nine victims in the case, the recollections of Colombian military officials and Chiquita executives, expert reports, and a summary of key documentary evidence produced by Michael Evans, director of the National Security Archive’s Colombia documentation project.

“This historic ruling marks the first time that an American jury has held a major U.S. corporation liable for complicity in serious human rights abuses in another country,” according to a press release from EarthRights International, which represents victims in the case.

  • Destruction of the jungles sacred to the indigenous Lacandon people in order to build a train to take tourists to Cancún. (sources: 1 2 3 4)
  • Allowed feminicide and violence against women increase in Mexico City and lying about it (sources: 1 2 3)
  • Allowed for Mexico City Police to brutalize feminist protestors (sources: 1 2 3 4 )
  • Defunded programs to supply children with cancer treatment, causing nationwide shortages of ontological medication, and lying about the shortages even existing. (sources: 1 2 3 4 5 6)
  • Refusing to maintain Mexico City's metro lines until one of the lines collapsed, killing and injuring over 100 people. (sources: 1 2)
  • Increased military presence nationwide despite promising not to, (sources: 1 2) and caused both Culiacanazos (dont be lazy and go read about it on wikipedia)

Some of the sources are in spanish, some of them are in english. I could talk about all of the candidates assasinated or all the reporters that were murdered but i think my point is clear by now. thank you moni @lipid for helping me compile sources!

Girl we didnt "choose the white woman over the indigenous nominee" 😭😭😭 Xóchitl was massively unpopular because she's from the coalition of conservative parties who are anti-abortion, anti-lgbt rights and pro-conversion therapy.

Not to say that the PRI ran the country as a one-party dictatorship for 70 years, and did things like the student massacre of Tlatelolco in 1968.
