It is difficult to explain how his words disarmed me, how efficiently succinct and impenetrable his argument was. All my conceptions, even my guilt and my wish to die seemed utterly unimportant, and i completely forgot myself and the barbaric scene that surrounded me. For the first time in my life, I was seen.

So something that kind of bothers me about the rings of power (like, more than the general confusion about. Everything) is that scene when Galadriel is like "Say something only Elrond could know!" and he tells her about how they met when he was a child, and that she gave him water.

Cool. Okay. Now my issue is: He kind of makes it seem like he was all alone. Where was Elros? Were Maedhros and Maglor still around?

Did Elrond tell her about his dads? What was her reaction to seeing MAEDHROS AND MAGLOR, that Elrond described as his caretakers?

Can you imagine 8 year old Elrond inviting 'the nice elf lady' over to where he lived, and Maedhros opening the door, seeing his cousin and just shutting it in her face in panic?

They would have left, right? When did Galadriel see Elrond again?

DID THEY EVER TALK ABOUT THAT???

See, that's the kind of stuff I want to see in a TV show.

I’ve been chewing on this also.

I have a few ideas, but none of them quite fit this narrative.

1. This happened before the kinslaying. Maybe he was playing on the beach and got lost… felt alone because his father was gone and his mother was unable to give him the attention he needed?

2. It happens after the War of Wrath. His caretakers have abandoned him, his brother chose to become mortal, and he was feeling alone and miserable. Maybe no one trusted him because of his upbringing, but Galadriel wasn’t afraid of him.

3. This happened DURING the kinslaying. He was alone and terrified at some point, Galadriel found him, and he was captured later during the confusion?

I never thought it would have happened while he was with Maglor and Maedhros, but that idea is fascinating! Very possible that they weren’t the most careful child-minders, and let them wander around. It could make sense that if he was alone and Galadriel knew who he was, she’d have to let him go back to ensure his brother’s safety.

:D

I love these takes! Especially the third one, that has such good potential!

Like, picture this: Galadriel was somewhere around Sirion, maybe she heard the chaos and came to their aid, or she arrived earlier on with a few others to help them against a possible attack after she heard they had turned down the offer of friendship and peaceful cooperation the sons of Feanor offered them.

Regardless of whether she helped during the fight or not, when they have lost, she starts searching for survivors, bringing them together in groups so they can defend themselves against possible after attacks.

She is already on her way back to the camp they have set up for the survivors, when a flash of something dark catches her eye. She turns to the sea, squints, and suddenly, she sees a child, curled up between the dunes.

For a terrible, frightening moment, she fears that they are dead, and walks towards them with a heavy weight on her shoulders. The idea of having to bury more elves, more children, is something she has always despised. But when she kneels down and turns their face away from the sand, she notices they are breathing.

A relieved smile finds its way onto Galadriels face, spreading her dry lips without her notice, and as she scans the boys body for induries, she reaches for the skin of water hanging from her belt.

Luckily, she can't see any blood, only little abrasions on his hands, likely from moments he has fallen, his chubby legs not able to carry him further.

She gently shakes the boys shoulder.

He opens his eyes slowly, and she hopes the blood smeared across her cheek won't frighten him. "Are you hurt?" She asks, keeping her voice as gentle and soft as she can.

"I -" he stops, hiccuping. Tears well up in his eyes, and she softly shushes him. "There's no need for it if you can't speak now. Here," she offers him the water, regarding his chapped lips with a frown. How long has he been out here, all alone? The battle has gone on for days.

The child drinks, staring at her with wide eyes from behind the skin he holds with both hands. She tries a smile again, feeling it sit awkwardly between her cheeks, not quite sure what it is doing there after such horrible bloodshed.

"I'm Galadriel," she says, reaching out to take the water from him once he has finished drinking. "What is your name?"

"E-- Elrond." He is shaking, and she wishes she had a cloak or a blanket to wrap around his shoulders. The sun is going down, and the summer is nearing its end.

"Elrond?" She frowns. That name seems familiar, but she can't quite place it. The screaming from earlier is still ringing in her ears, seeming to echo in the cries of the seagulls, and is making it hard to think straight. She shakes her head slightly, packing the water away. It doesn't matter who this child is, all she has to do is bring him to safety.

"Alright, Elrond. The fighting is over now," not quite true, at this rate she is wondering whether it ever will be, but the child doesn't need to hear that, "Me and a group of others have set up a safe camp. You can sleep there, and we can take care of any wounds you might have."

His face lights up with hope. "Is Elros there?"

Galadriels brows furrow. She is sure she knows those names. "Maybe," she says. "Would you like to come with me to make sure?"

Elrond scrunches up his face, then he nods. Galadriel sighs in relief, smiles at him, and stands up. She lifts him from the ground and carries him away.

-

Elrond's brother is not there, and the boy is inconsolable. He doesn't want to sleep, keeps asking her for 'Naneth and Ada', and Galadriel does not have the heart to tell him that his parents are most likely dead. She knows the pain of losing family, has carried it with her since even before Finrod died in that accursed tower and Angrod and Aegnor fell in the Dagor Bragollach, when her father had left his children to cross the Helcaraxe alone.

She wants to stay with him, but there is so much she needs to do still. Her throat hurts from all the singing, mending cuts and burns and broken bones, the exhaustion of the last days has finally caught up to her, and by the time she is dragged to bed by one of the other healers, it hurts to stand upright.

She has given too much.

But still she can't fall asleep, and so her eyes open when something touches her open palm. To her surprise, it is Elrond, fully clothed, and staring at her with wide eyes. What he has placed in her hand is a seashell, a mussel, if she isn't mistaken.

She slowly sits up, and the child takes a step back.

"Elrond?" she rasps. "Shouldn't you be in bed?"

He bites his lip, looking at the seashell, then the exit of the tent. Galadriel feels a sense of dread welling up.

"What is going on?", she asks, trying to keep her voice steady. Elrond mumbles something she can't understand.

"I'm sorry?"

"I know where Elros is!" He almost shouts it, and clasps his hand over his mouth. Galadriel notices that he is clutching onto an apple.

"Oh," she breathes. Elrond refuses to meet her eyes. "You can't go out there," she tries to reason. "Not alone. Not now. It is too dangerous."

Not only because of her cursed cousins.

"But if I don't go now he'll be gone!"

"Elrond, you don't know if that is true --"

"Yes I do!"

There is a wave of power in those words, and he seems older, suddenly, taller. Galadriels eyes widen. There is something about this childs fea, something she has not felt since leaving Nargothrond all those centuries ago. But she would always recognize Maia magic, even if it is thin and unpracticed, stretched out across generations.

She knows who Elrond is. She knows who his brother is.

And he knows where he is, there is no doubt about it.

For a moment, she considers her options. If Elros is out there, he is either hiding or a captive of the sons of Feanor. She nods.

"I will go with you," she decides, already standing up, but Elrond shakes his head. "No, you can't," he says, like it is an obvious fact she is somehow missing.

"Why not?"

"Because that's not what happens."

He is so sure of that, and a chill runs down her spine, both of fear for him and of sadness. "Oh," is all she can say.

Elrond is rocking on his heels, looking to the exit again. "If I let you go," she starts, hesitantly, and his gaze snaps back to her. "Will you be alright? Both of you?"

He blinks. "I will have Elros," he says. "That is enough."

"But will you be harmed?" He furrows his brows. That seems to take him a while, and she considers simply tying him to a desk until the sons of Feanor are far, far away, and Elros with them. "I don't think so," he says, slowly, and she breathes out. Valar, he is just a child.

Could she really let him go? She stares at him.

Could she seperate him from his brother? A flash of golden hair and bell light laughter dances across her vision.

"I will go with you," she says, and when he opens his mouth in protest, she continues, "to make sure you get there safely. There are dangerous animals outside of Sirion."

Not only animals, but she pushes that thought down, as far as it can go.

Elrond drags her out of the tent, and runs over the fields like he knows exactly where he is going. He probably does, Galadriel thinks as she follows him. Her legs ache by the time he stops and turns to her.

The light of fire shines through the pine trees, and she can just barely make out the shapes of tents. Her throat tightens.

"I can't come with you," she states, asks, doubt and fear making her mind swim. He nods.

"It will be alright," he whispers, and the irony makes her lips curl into a bitter smile. Shouldn't she be the one to comfort him?

"I think we will see each other again." He smiles up at her. One of his upper front teeth is missing.

She kneels down in front of him, grasping his hands. "May the Valar protect you," she prays, and his eyes shine with unknown power. "They will." There is no doubt in his voice.

She squeezes his hands tighter. What a brave, brave child.

She hopes with all her heart that she isn't sending him to certain doom.

"Wait," she says, when Elrond wants to let go. He turns to shoot her a questioning glanze. She unfastens the skin of water from her belt with shaky hands and offers it to him. He beams at her, a sight so unusual it makes tears well up in her eyes. She hopes with all her heart he won't ever lose that smile.

"Farewell, Elrond, son of Elwing," she says, standing up. He waves his hand, holding the water tight to his chest.

Then he is gone and Galadriel stands alone in the dark.

I stumbled across this randomly and I'm not sure if I ever posted the polished version of this, so I'm just gonna leave this here:

“So you are one of Elrond’s foster fathers?” Elrond shifted uncomfortably next to her, and Celebrian deepened her very sweet smile towards Maglor. “I would love to say I heard a lot about you, but he hasn’t actually mentioned you all that much.”

Started a oneshot. Found this amusing. There you go.
