When I was a kid, I regularly lost reading privileges for “having an attitude” and “acting out”.

It wasn’t as simple as being told not to read during other activities- one of the first times it happened, I remember being six years old, watching my stepfather pull fistfuls of books off my bookshelf and throw them to the floor in a heaping mess while I cried and asked him to stop.

It was weird. Every other adult I knew described me as exceptionally well-behaved, but at home, it was the opposite, and it was blamed on “learning bad habits from that shit you’re reading”.

Because I couldn’t read at home, I spent all my free time at school in the library, reading with my friends.

When I grew up and moved away, I realized that my family life was toxic and abusive, and the “attitudes” I was being punished for were standing up for myself, standing up for my younger siblings, and resisting actual, real-life psychological abuse. Because I’d learned from what I’d read that my family wasn’t normal, not like my parents said it was, and in my stories, the heroes were the people who spoke out when it was hard to.

It is insane to me that there are students right now who can’t access books. It is insane that books are being outlawed. It is perverse that we are stealing away an entire generation’s ability to contextualize their lives, to learn about the world around them, to develop critical thinking skills and express themselves and feel connected to the world or escape from it, whatever and whenever and however they need.

That is not how you raise a compassionate, thoughtful, powerful society.

That’s how you process cattle.

It’s fucking disgusting.

It’s patriarchal fascism. If children don’t have a frame of reference for “normal” beyond what the Authority chooses to give them, they won’t object when the Authority does something abnormal (or fascist)

It's 1:48 AM, somehow already June "12th," 2023, and I yawn as I make my way towards bed. I pass a Conservation Event flyer, reading "Spronkus Grand Reintroduction to Local Environment, 12 Jun!" and, ignoring the calls of my bed, I look up Spronkus (aka the r/196 community migrating to Tumblr from Reddit) (unpictured: me realizing r/196 is where all the bomb-ass 100gecs-core hrt memes come from lmao). 3 hours later, I'm eagerly attending r/196's release into the wild, circles under my eyes and Spronkus memorabilia gripped in hand. (For the sake of clarity: Spronkus represents r/196 refugees in this comic)ALT
An r/196 MOD in a safari hat (because that's what nature conservationists wear i guess) gently places a crate on the ground, and when they open it, Spronkus is inside! A yellow rabbit with a trans flag bandana. Spronkus appears... less-than enthused about the new environment. Overstimulated, perhaps. Trepidatious. But looking over their shoulder, the MOD gives them a thumbs up, and Spronkus ventures into the blue landscape of Tumblr.ALT
Spronkus approaches some flowers, sniffing them before giving one an experimental munch. Oh, what's this? Some Tumblr cats have appeared? Spronkus and the kittens seem to be feeling each other out... and they're getting along! Look a them run and play. This is great, I hope Spronkus likes it here enough to stay! But my thoughts are interrupted as I see something worrisome approaching on the horizon.ALT
Oh no, it's a wild boar! (aka an asshole of the TERF variety) Spronkus doesn't see the boar behind them and- oh no, the boar is charging!ALT
The boar pierces Spronkus in the side with her tusks. It's all over. Spronkus is down- wait, what's this? Spronkus is completely unaffected by the attack. Silence ensues as boar and kittens alike try to make sense of the situation.ALT
Spronkus looks at the boar. They say "Bitch I'm from Reddit," and then their jaw unhinges into a gigantic maw, like a bear trap that got invited to the French Revolution.ALT
And then I and the other event attendees are being splattered with blood from the sidelines. The MOD is unphased. I have no mouth but I make raucous applause, now sporting more spontaneously-generated Spronkus merch, including a shirt that reads, "Get Spronkd." What was I ever afraid of? Spronkus has overcome much worse than fringe bullies online.ALT

I see people talking about the Brave browser in the whole Firefox vs chrome debate, and while people rightly point out that it’s just chromium and that they do shady cryptocurrency shit, I never see anyone point out that Brave’s founder and CEO is Brandan Eich.

He founded Brave after massive protests against him becoming CEO of Mozilla, resigning after 11 days. And the reason for those protests? He donated a lot of money to the Prop 8 campaign to ban gay marriage.

So just remember: it’s not just another chromium fork, it’s not just a browser with cryptocurrency bullshit, it’s also the browser founded by a homophobe because he got kicked out of his former organization for being a homophobe.

Also, he invented Javascript. I’m willing to believe that maybe he has grown on the gay marriage issue, and made amends for his former mistakes. But Javascript cannot be forgiven.

Today (June 26, 2023) is the 20th anniversary of Lawrence v. Texas, the most important Supreme Court case in gay history. It finally ruled that consensual sodomy cannot be a crime and all state laws criminalizing it are invalid.

People don’t realize how recent it was that cops could arrest you solely for having gay sex, in the privacy of your own bedroom. It was slowly decriminalized state by state, but like 1/3 of all states still had those laws in place until 2003.

It didn’t get nearly as much fanfare and recognition at the time as the 2015 decision that legalized gay marriage. But I think it established a far more crucial right.

the way sesame street, a pbs puppet show for literal babies, is pressing on with pride content despite vitriolic monsters descending on every post to insinuate they’re pedophiles or demons while some of the biggest companies on the planet who could swim in olympic swimming pools of money like scrooge mcduck on steroids buckle and cave just emphasizes how completely and utterly pathetic these corporations are. they’d butcher a baby if it meant saving a penny.

A tweet by the sesame Street account posted June 23rd 2023, with the caption "celebrating trans people today and every day #pridemonth" with an image that reads the same featuring a fuzzy heart with the trans flag colors on itALT

where Starbucks and Target and Budweiser will be bullied into submission with the slightest push, puppets and people in your neighborhood stand tall

Sesame Workshop has been doing pride stuff since 2017. The Muppet Wiki has a nice list of stuff they’ve done:

the upside of ADHD is that it makes you a fucking genius

the downside is that you don’t get to decide when and for how long you’re a genius.

Or what you are going to be a genius about.

You have a big work project?

Nah. You’re now a genius at making boardgames. For 7 hours.
