Video: Pedestrian caught setting McLaren on fire

The alleged offender can be seen setting a cardboard pizza box on fire before putting it under the wheel of the $350,000 luxury sports car.

Police are on the hunt for a pedestrian who was caught on video setting an exotic performance car – worth approximately $350,000 – on fire.

According to a 9News report, CCTV video captured the alleged offender lighting a cardboard pizza box under an umbrella along Rodd Street in Sefton – a suburb approximately 23km west of Sydney – on 3 May 2024.

In the footage, the perpetrator can be seen waiting for the fire to build and hiding behind a tree to avoid suspicion before placing the lit box under the front left wheel of the McLaren 570S coupé and walking away.

Per 9News, a neighbour reportedly tried to pour water over the escalating fire but was unsuccessful – with the fire growing out of control.

Hamad Ajaje, the owner of the car returned home in a ute to find the car ablaze as firefighters attempted to put the fire out.

“It’s devastating, to be honest. The way we came in and just seen [the car] on fire,” Mr Ajaje told 9News.

According to the news outlet, Mr Ajaje reportedly listed the high-performance vehicle on sale online three days before the incident occurred.

Authorities are asking for public assistance in identifying the person responsible for the arson attack.
