Earlier today, Nintendo hosted a new Direct, and now we have Sony hosting a new State of Play.
State of Play September 2023
The summer’s barely ended, and now publishers and developers are gearing up for the Fall and Winter months, boasting tons of new exciting video games to play as we head toward cooler weather. Sure, you probably have a large backlog to clean up, but if you’re not continually adding to it, does it count as backlog?
We’re recapping all the news, reveals, and updates shown during today’s State of Play, so let’s dive right in!
Baby Steps

Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord (PSVR2)
Gear up with the latest Ghostbustin’ gadgets, from remote turrets to ghost decoys. Take on a variety of missions, like collecting dark PKE or closing interdimensional portals. You must work together to solve puzzles, trap ghosts, and stop the March of the Malevolent. There’s nothing like bustin’ with friends, but even if you’re playing solo, you can take on the Ghost Lord yourself with the help of a ghostly companion.
Are you ready to save the city of San Francisco from the Ghost Lord? Grab your friends and squad up in this cooperative multiplayer adventure, made exclusively for VR – available October 26, 2023!
Resident Evil 4 VR Mode (PSVR2)
Much like Resident Evil Village, the VR mode for Resident Evil 4 Remake will be available exclusively for the PlayStation VR2 at no additional cost this winter.
Today, we also saw an all-new trailer for Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways featuring Ada Wong, and it’s coming on September 21, 2023.
Additionally, new content is coming to Mercenaries on September 21, 2023.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

All new gameplay trailer for upcoming Ghostrunner 2. Blood will run in Ghostrunner 2, a hardcore FPP slasher set in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk future.

Sony revealed three sleek metallic finishes of the Deep Earth Collection – available in three lustrous colours for the DualSense wireless controller and matching PS5 console covers.

Helldivers II
Helldivers 2 is a third-person team-based shooter that features the elite Helldivers unit fighting to win an intergalactic war against a growing alien threat.
From a third-person perspective, players use various weapons (pistols, submachine guns, flamethrowers) and stratagems (turrets, aerial assaults, etc.) to shoot and kill enemy forces. The fight includes blood and dismemberment on the part of the alien forces. Blood spurts and dismemberments can also be seen when players are hit by environmental explosions or by their allies.
Enemy camps and battlefields have bloodstains and dismembered bodies. In this video, we see Arrowhead Games members playing a team mission.
Helldivers 2 launches on February 8, 2024, on PS5 and Steam.

Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn
Bandai Namco revealed a surprising new trailer for Tales of Arise in the form of an expansion called Beyond the Dawn.

Honkai: Star Rail
Honkai: Star Rail is a sci-fi space fantasy RPG where you’ll explore worlds of the unknown; you play as The Trailblazer, a character who explores these worlds by boarding the Astral Express. miHoYo says when Honkai: Star Rail launches, players can experience fantasy elements with myths and legends tied into the narrative as they work to stop the Stellaron from destroying all life across the universe.
Honkai: Star Rail lands on PlayStation on October 11, 2023.
Foamstars
Foamstars focuses on delivering a fresh new take on the shooter genre, all based on “engaging in energetic foam battles that anyone can pick up and play.”
Square Enix’s Foamstars is getting an open beta from September 29 to October 1.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
After escaping from the dystopian city of Midgar, Cloud and his friends set out on a journey across the planet. New adventures await in a vibrant and vast world – sprint across grassy plains on a Chocobo and explore expansive environments.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on February 29, 2024.
