An open letter to Patrick Spence

As I am sure you are by now aware, your recent app launch is an absolute, unmitigated disaster.

Among the myriad of features that have "courageously" disappeared (lol), I will pick on just two. It's just unimaginable that we are now unable to manage a queue or control group volumes. Those features alone are quite literally the very essence of why your many loyal customers have invested thousands of dollars into the Sonos ecosystem.

I am old enough to remember when, mere days ago, I could use a widget on my phone and easily group speakers throughout my house, navigate to an album that I saved in my favorites, add it as a play next track, and then increase the volume independently for different rooms.... It was glorious!

Now, it's clear that your company is in damage control mode, and some of the most egregious issues with the new app (thank God I never used Sonos for alarms), have future release dates whereby they will....maybe.... Come back by mid-June. Well guess what? That is unacceptable.

The app worked flawlessly 2 days ago and it is close to useless today. What software company could possibly allow for such a fundamentally broken app to be rolled out with no option for users to opt-in / opt-out? I mean, beta testing is a thing, so there is no way this could have come as a surprise. So, the only possibility is that you knew this was going to be a cluster, but decided to force it on your users anyways in hopes they would just deal with it.

As if that weren't bad enough, the only response I have seen is some marketing nonsense about how it was "courageous" to take a few steps back while you prepare to "leap into the future." I really feel gross having just typed that. I am quite certain the future will still involve me playing music in multiple rooms from an app where I organize and control music from various sources... This wheel does not need reinventing.

I say all of this as someone who is/was anxiously awaiting the release of your forthcoming (Ace) headphones. I fully intended to give your company another $450 for these, and I hoped that they would be nothing more than just another "room" that I could group as I would any other speaker, unless I connect the 3.5mm jack at which point they will just play locally. It's not rocket science and it should not require a bottom-up rebuild of the core app to accomplish.

Please fix this mess! Roll back to the old app and call this new beta version "S3" where we can choose to move if/when it's actually ready for prime time.

Why I Think Apple Will Never Port macOS to iPads

Hey everyone,

With the new M4 iPad specs out, it's clear these tablets could totally handle macOS. It's got me thinking—Apple's making iPads look more and more like MacBooks with all these accessories. So why not just throw macOS on there and turn it into a portable MacBook with a detachable keyboard?

But then, there's the whole Apple vs. jailbreaking situation. If iPads ran macOS, wouldn’t that make them more open to tweaks and customizations since you would have root privileges? Sure, Apple could tighten things up, but imagine the backlash if they offered a stripped-down macOS just to keep it "secure" from threats. Seems like a lot of us wouldn’t be happy with that.

What do you guys think?
