Federal Court judges said 25 years of fines have done nothing to stop the CFMEU breaking the law because the construction union “simply regards itself as free to disobey the law”.

A full bench of the Federal Court fined the CFMEU the near maximum penalty of $60,000 for breaking right of entry laws after finding that its organiser Dean Rielly acted in “open defiance” of safety requirements at Queensland’s biggest infrastructure project, the Cross River Rail.
