Share Drive files within your Hangouts conversations

When you’re meeting with your colleagues remotely you want to get things done quickly, and face-to-face conversation is still the fastest and simplest way to communicate. Today, #Hangouts is making collaboration even easier by letting you share links to Drive files without ever leaving your conversation. You can share a link to any Drive file right from the chat window in any Hangouts video call. Shared links will show a preview of the file right in the chat message, even when other participants don’t have their chat window open. The update will be rolling out over the next few hours, so try sharing a Drive link in your next Hangouts video call and start collaborating on Docs with just one click.

But there is already drive app in video hangouts.

So... we won't be able to view slides, docs or sheets full-screen during a Hangout anymore? If this were just a bonus I'd be in favour, but ditching the existing Drive app next month seems like a big step backwards to me. We're an art college that makes extensive use of the Hangout Drive app to bring hi-res images into a session to critique, as well as using slides for student presentations to the group. After playing with this new chat version, Hangouts no longer works for these use-cases and we may well have to consider alternatives. I just hope they reconsider dropping Drive app on 15 Dec or at least drastically improve its replacement from being just a glorified link tool.

The possibility to view drive documents within the Hangout screen (via Drive App) is a nice feature which a lot of people use. So hopefully the Drive App will remain active after December 15th!

Great post! Will work well for my client trainings!

The files linked this way to Drive are not being shared automatically or given the option to share them like in other area's in Google Apps.  Why is this anomely?

I used Talk all the time. I'd even be open to pay a fee for Talk-Like hangouts. Google is either making a big mistake, like Coke Classic did, or it intends to appeal to people who like to look at themselves all the time in video.

Why can't we share files in non-video hangouts?  This way is so much faster and convenient than emailing attachments, as well as uploading to drive (or somewhere else) and pasting a link back into the chat.

It blows my mind that Google continually screws up integration between it's own core services. The upside down way they are handling google drive makes it the least attractive cloud storage solution on the market. SHAME

+Killian Hermann I completely agree. I used to be able to add pictures from Drive into Hangouts conversations. That stopped after the last upgrade. I use Mega now.

What happened? I can no longer attach photos from my drive into a hangouts chat.. Is anyone else having this issue?
