First time driving to London • First time driving to London

Hi

It's my first time driving to London in the next month. I've been before by train but never by a car. I am going to the city center.

I've heard quite a few people saying that they got fines for different reasons. And how expensive is the parking there.

Has anyone driven to London before?

If so do you have any tips? Eg, where to park, what areas to avoid.

A few of my mates been before and some just paid the parking and some parked outside the city and either took a train, taxi or bus to avoid any hassle.

UK Travel Advice re: Transportation • UK Travel Advice re: Transportation

Hi everyone!

I am planning a 15-21 day trip in mid-June of 2025 with my husband and our two teenagers. I have a rough draft of a schedule but would like feedback, especially regarding transportation. We don't mind driving and know that we will need a car for part of the trip. However, we are hesitant to drive in really trafficy places. Additionally, we want to see quite a bit of the area but don't want to constantly move around. We like to just relax and feel the vibe of a place. Now and again we'll go to big tourist sites but, overall, we like nature, restaurants, seeing animals, some shopping, and maybe something adventure-like such as horseback riding or canoeing.

Here's what we have so far. Please let me know if the transportation between any of these places is a headache or if there are better places that serve the same purpose but are easier to get to, etc. Also, glancing at the places we are thinking of going to, what castle would you suggest visiting? We could probably visit 2 tops.

Arrive in London (3 nights)

Train to York (3 nights)

Car to Northumberland (2 nights) (nature, Hadrian's Wall, small village)

Car to York, then train to Edinburgh (3 nights)

Car to Isle of Mull (3 nights) (We are very open for this part of the trip. My husband wants to experience the Highlands but I'm not quite sure where to stay. We don't want to stay new places every night and would love to do something unique–horseback riding, boat...?

Car to Glasgow and then train to Bakewell (2 nights) We want to experience a small, cute, village

Visit UK? • Visit UK?

Hello, with my boyfriend we want to go to England from 4 days. If or if we want to spend a day in London, we go from Belgium and arrive in England by boat with the car. Could you recommend good, beautiful and cheap places to stay (NO HOSTELS we have not yet ventured into that world) Also what should we take into account to go, taxes? Transit? What is it like to drive there? what other cities we should know, characteristic places and so on...

ETA info needed • ETA info needed

Hi, I'm thinking of travelling from Romania to the UK for two days, and upon my searches, I discovered that since sometime in 2024, we will need an Electornic Travel Authorisation issued - but when I went on the government website to fill out the form, upon uploading a pic of my passport I got the message from the website that Romanian passport are not eligible for ETA (only for visas for longer stays). As of the info on the government's website, EU citizens are still free to travel without any other authorisations, just a valid passport, but I'm looking to confirm the info with anyone from the EU or who has travelled to the EU from UK in the past couple of months.

Thank you!

Advice on day trips from London • Advice on day trips from London

Hi everyone. I'm visiting London with my wife and two children (6 and 2) and we're staying for about 10 days. We wanted to see Oxford, Bath, Costwolds and Canterbury. For the latter we were just going to go there and back one day, but for the other three I was thinking of booking a hotel somewhere central and seeing all three in two days (Oxford, Costwolds, Bath). We are not driving so we will tale trains and busses. What would be a better place to spend two nights. I was thinking Oxford or Cheltenhan? Any suggeations?

Seeking a little starter advice • Seeking a little starter advice

Hi all. So I'm long term planning a trip to the UK (from the merry old land of Australia), 38F and hoping to make it my 40th bday present to myself. I will 99% likely be travelling solo, so I'm a little conflicted. I am tossing up maybe driving around the country myself, so I can see what I want at my own pace, because tours are generally more expensive for solo travellers. I'm also not sure how safe I'd be on my own (also lonely). Putting concerns aside, what would a more seasoned traveller recommend: tours or self-driving? Or another option i haven't thought of? I have no family outside Australia, so sadly no one to lean on for company/help. Thank you

To visit or not to visit Leeds/Canterbury • To visit or not to visit Leeds/Canterbury

I’m not sure if this is the best subreddit for this question, so please let me know if there’s a more proper place.

I’m currently on a church choir trip to England. We spent a week in Wells and sang at the Wells Cathedral. We’re now on our “London Extension” which has involved being in London the last day and a half. We’ve done some typical London things like Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, West Minster Abbey & Churchill War Rooms. Tomorrow, we’re supposed to take a bus to Leeds Castle then Canterbury. We go back to Nashville Friday afternoon.

My sister, mom and I are trying to decide if we want to join the excursion to Leeds & Canterbury tomorrow or stay back in London to do more sight seeing here. My sister has been to London before but is game to repeat some things that my mom & I haven’t seen. We have more things in mind to do in London like touring Parliment, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, Globe Theatre, etc.

Are Leeds Castle & Canterbury worth it? We aren’t thrilled about the idea of being on a bus for several hours & we don’t have much time left in London. But, Canterbury does look very interesting & historical. Leeds Castle I’m sure is lovely as well. Does anybody have any advice or recommendations?
