I’m so impatient for season 3. I made plans to watch it with my best friend on thursday when the first half drops but idk if I can wait for her and not just binge at midnight. I’ve been listing to What A Barb, watching edits on youtube, lurking on this subreddit, watching and rewatching the sneak peeks and trailer so many times. (I have ADHD and I am definitely hyperfixating lol) idk if anyone else can relate but right now I have half a mind to reread Romancing Mr. Bridgerton for the 4th time or rewatch the first two seasons (again).

And I had to make up an excuse to not have her visit this week from out of state, so I can watch it on my own the first time haha. I’m sorry, she knows i’m obsessed, but doesn’t know know and i would not be able to rein it in 😂 I will just enjoy it way more if i’m unhinged and screaming crying

Twelve Years vs Three Years

I just keep thinking about how it makes perfect sense why Book Colin takes way longer to fall for Penelope than show Colin. Book Penelope was on the marriage mart for 12 years, while Show Pen just 3.

Book Polin has a 5 year age gap. They met when Penelope was 15 and Colin was 21. This is their largest initial obstacle. Penelope is literally just a baby, and even though she immediately turns 16, she still thought she was too young to debut in society and felt like she needed more time. So you have an adult man meeting a kid who still considers herself a kid. It takes time to overcome that association and see her as an adult. I can see the show giving us a young Polin meet cute, but Colin getting over the childhood associations should be faster with a 3 year age gap and both being kids when they met vs adult/minor.

Book Polin are not close friends. They are family friends and acquaintances, but the beginning of the story is really the first time Colin spends extended time with Penelope. Book Colin knew Penelope had a crush on him, so he intentionally went out of his way to not lead her on and play with her feelings- keeping her at a distance. He put a wall up in their relationship, and it only starts to fall at the beginning of the story when they start building a true friendship, and then speed runs into lovers when Colin starts to fall.

Book Polin actually don't see each other as much as we think. These twelve years have them apart more than together, with Penelope mostly sustaining a one sided crush without much actual interaction from Colin. They see each other during the social season only, which already means they spend more of the year apart than together, and then on top of that Book Colin travels way more than Show Colin does, being gone for a whole entire year and missing the season completely sometimes. And important to consider in all this- Book Colin does not write Penelope letters.

Add on proximity to this as well. Even when they're both in London, Book Polin were not neighbors like they are in the show (unfortunately book Colin cannot stalk the Featherington garden) for the entire 12 years Pen was out. The Featherington's home is close to *Violet's* house, not the Bridgerton house, and book Book Colin actually didn't live with any of his family anymore for years until the beginning of RMB when he moved back in with his mother when the lease lapsed on his bachelor lodgings while he was traveling. So even the friendly scenes that are based on him running into her in their shared neighborhood across Berkeley Square, trying to walk her home or running into her having tea at his mother's house, are specific to the season they fell in love, and not something Colin was ignoring for 12 years running. There are reasons why that year was THE year for them over any other.

All this is important because one thing is true for any version of Colin- book or show- will fall in love with Penelope if he's able to spend quality time with her while she's being herself. Her honesty pulls him in like a magnet.

So by the show changing their relationship to make them far closer friends to start off with than book Polin, putting them in each other's orbit more and removing the age gap that would make it weird until they get old enough for their ages to even out, they've made it so inevitable that they had to make Colin recognize his feelings faster. Book Colin is completely understandable for not seeing Pen for all those years- he literally wasn't around her- but Show Colin doesn't have the same excuse, and THAT is why waiting that long would seem like it was dragging out the obvious. And I know the show has added in some artificial ways to egg Colin along, but like... given the nature of how they've developed their relationship in the show, Show Colin doesn't need a big push to fall.
