Demo: Why a VR Reading app is a good idea (and hence I built one)

Hi, I just submitted my VR reading app on the quest store today. Here is the demo (watch full screen on mobile).

Here's why a reading app for VR is a good idea (and hence I built one for fun):

  1. I can read in peace without distractions

  2. AI generated skyboxes which match the content

  3. I can read lying down

  4. Text and comic books look great

  5. Customisable ratios

  6. Reading is a solo activity

  7. AOT !

Few interesting things implemented:

  1. Dynamic resolution rendering according to reader scale

  2. Pagination and virtualisation

  3. Scaling, rotating and dragging interactions

  4. Dynamically allocating text content to pages for scaling

  5. AI gen skybox for current scene context

  6. Completely controller free, hands only UI

Ps, if you work in the VR industry, please see my cover letter here as I'm looking to get my foot in the door.

Thanks

Ok. I'm going to beat what I'm assuming is a dead horse, but I genuinely have to ask for the people who pay for beat saber....why? The "songs" that come with the game are just generic house songs on repeat. Ya they're fun and fast but now we've got the real songs every one wants locked up on a pricing system worse the the original iTunes market. Am I confused? Yes moonrider is a bit janky and I get, it's not cool playing a free website game but like ITS BEYOND FUNCTIONAL AND IS FUN. With actual songs that I like and listen to. Please. Are there others who feel like me or is everyone just down to pay over $100 just to get maybe a few artist's songs? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone I understand so little.

Quest 3 WiFi still broken for large population of users- Meta support useless

Its been over a month since v64 rolled out and broke the WiFi connection (frequent disconnects making games unplayable unless using a wired link cable and playing PCVR over link). Some users were even getting this before v64 but v64 made it even worse for them.

There is a forum post on their official forums that has now grown to over 20 pages:

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Quest-2-3-amp-Pro-Connectivity-Issues/td-p/1100199

Occasionally users post half baked solutions like disable ipv6 or set your router to recognize your quest 3's mac address and give it a static IP but then come back later saying, "oh wait its actually not working after a few days of working".

For those of us not using a link cable that cant get a steady connection this is now over a month of owning a paperweight, not to mention countless hours trying these solutions to no avail.

You'd think Meta could say hey were working on a fix for the next version heres what we've found so far and heres an ETA, but its radio silence.

How do we not have the ability to roll back to a working version of the firmware? This is ridiculous.

VR causing derealization...?

I don't know exactly what it is but I've recently bought a Meta Quest 2 and went savage on it, racked up like 12 hours on it in 2 days and I'm starting to feel like things aren't really real anymore,

When I pull my phone out to type a message to somebody it feels like it's not real, it's a weird sensation, focusing on stuff creates this weird sensation... Will it eventually go away or am I fried?

When are Meta going to *fix* the broken room recognition?

Again, this just happened, has been happening since the Quest 1 released, and I hate it.

Last night, I wanted to use the Q3 in my living room while seated on the couch. This is outside the play area in that room, so I had to destroy my boundary and create a circular stationary boundary, which means if I want to use it in that room again while standing, I'll need to re-create that one.

Today, I went into another room of my house where I often play, with the Quest 3 fully turned off, and I powered it on in that room. To my exasperation, it didn't recognise this room, and instead said I was outside the tracking area; and I could see the circular area as if through the wall, in the other room.

Meta, I know you want the Quest to just magically recognise what room you're in. But it's been ~4 years now and that demonstrably doesn't work. Can you give power users a choice to have a series of saved locations, and let us tell the headset where we are when it inevitably screws that up?

You want to push mixed reality as a big feature, and gave the Q3 a depth sensor for it... But no-one is going to do the full 3D room setup for their Quest until you fix this! Why would be when we'll just have to do it again next time? Could you imagine having to type in your address every time you use Amazon, or to log in to Reddit every time you want to post?

Any accessories that you consider a must-have for the Index?

I’m wondering what peoples’ experiences here are with the various gadgets/inserts and thingamajigs that have enhanced their experience in VR. Or who knows, maybe saved it altogether? Idk if that’s ever happened, but for now I’ll shoot my list and see what others have to say

  1. Prescription lens — This was a necessity for me since eyesight is bad and only got worse since I refused to wear glasses for so long. It’s a specific case, but without these lens inserts I would be blind as a bat now. Essential if you have a glasses prescription of any kind tbf

  2. Face gasket cover — I used to be a fatass. I’m less of a fatass now (and excuse me if it’s not correct to say this now) but I sweat a lot. It helps me maintain my set from becoming a pure cesspit of grime and sweat stains. Essential for the summer if you don’t have an AC or can’t use it (I can’t bc of medical reasons)

  3. USB heatsink — Just a neat little thing you plug in that prevents excess heating. Probably the cheapest of the bunch but so worth it

Honorable mention: Not a must-have, but it’s become very good enhancement for the fun factor in FPS games I like to play. I mean a VR gun stock. I got the ForceTub stock a while ago and it dramatically helps me with long range sniping in, for example Vail VR (especially with the big-scoped rifles but generally when I have to precisely aim at anything over a long distance). For close quarters, it’s a bit of a hit and miss — but as for immersion, I can’t understate how much it adds to it.
