Hello! I'm Mike Schubert, and I make the Potterless podcast, AMA!

What's good, fellow nerds! In case anyone is wondering who I am, I'm a grown man that never read the Harry Potter books as a child. My podcast, Potterless, documents my journey through the series for the first time. Each week, I go over a few chapters at a time with a different HP fanatic, poking fun at plot holes, making (often incorrect) predictions, and basking in the glory of the sassy characters.

Now that I'm a spoiler-free boy, I'm very excited to take part in more HP discussions. Feel free to ask me anything about the podcast, the Harry Potter series, me as a human, fan theories, ships, whatever! I'll start answering around noon Eastern. Talk soon!

Proof I'm a real human doing this: https://twitter.com/Schubes17/status/1174346448743358464?s=20

If you want to find more about the show, check out the website or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!

EDIT: I've got some recordings to do for Multitude podcasts, but I'll be checking in on this throughout the day and hope to answer as many questions as I can. Thanks all so much for being a part of this and most importantly, WIZARD ON!

Mike and other American's not understanding of British terms peeves me, especially when they dismiss it as something silly and stupid. I really want to shout and Mike!

I love Potterless so much ❤️

I started listening to Potterless 3 years ago. Every day on the bus to school I’d listen to an episode! (I was an awkward shy kid lmao)

I ended up getting really busy when I started uni and fell out of touch with Potterless 🥺 but I recently rediscovered it after 3 years and I am more hooked than ever!!

I’m nearing the end now of the book episodes which I was sad about, but I scrolled down on Spotify and SCHUBES HAS DONE THE MOVIES AS WELL! I can’t wait for the banter in those 😁

I don’t really listen to any other podcasts apart from Potterless, but it’s got everything I love: nostalgia (Harry Potter), and a good laugh from Scubes. So thanks for deciding to read Harry Potter that one random day!

Potterless fans! Who’s been your favourite guest star that’s been on Potterless so far and why?

Mine is a throw-up between Amanda and Kelly.

For the same reason, they add so much insight and really bringing a lot to the table from analysis which makes me think deeper on the books and the time they were written, their influences and all those smart things.

My experience with Potterless

I started listening to Potterless around two years ago I and loved it so much. Unfortunately I found myself being a lot more busy and didn't have the time to keep listening to it. Two days ago I saw on Spotify a recommendation for Mike's new podcast and learned that potterless is coming to an end. So now I've dedicated myself to re-listening to the entire podcast so I can relive the glory days and experience the stuff I missed out on. Thanks for the great memories Mike and I can't wait to listen to your new podcast! Your a legend!

I understand that social issues need to be called out. But nowadays It just seems like Mike and their guests are getting offended over the littlest things.

Mike calling out all the technicalities and plot holes in Crimes of Grindelwald is so fun! But making a big whoop over a black character being black for a full 5 minutes.... Meh

Idk it just feels like the podcast is trying to be "woke" but in the end just cringy.

Edit: maybe now that all the fantastic beasts are done and dusted (and most of JKRs materals) the podcast will be more enjoyable :) less bad movies and authors and more wholesome Harry Potter content ya know.

Anyone else listen to this podcast? The premise is that the host is a snarky grown man who reads a children’s book series for the first time and talks about it with people who are fans. He makes predictions, points out plot holes, etc.

I really wanted to like this podcast but it’s got some glaring issues and I’m not sure I want to continue. For reference, I’m on the episode where he begins Goblet of Fire. The main thing is that he reads a number of chapters and then goes on to discuss them but can’t recall basic facts from the book. Two examples, he calls Bertha Jorkins “Bertha Jockins” and also says he can’t remember if the room Voldemort is in is on fire or if there’s just a fire in it. He does this in other episodes too where there’s a tidbit from the chapter that he just read and gets it completely wrong. He’s also got some pretty bad analysis, which I guess he’s sacrificing in favor of just trying to be snarky (hate this word, by the way).

For example, he talks about how Voldemort is trying to be all secretive but completely disregards that the gardener is there and might find him. It’s pretty obvious that he knows Frank lives there because he lives there when Voldemort killed the Riddles, he also knows about Frank not having a wife, being an outcast, etc. The host also interprets Voldemort as being insecure by saying to Wormtail “oh, you just want me to be healthy to be rid of me!” Maybe this is coming from hindsight, but it seems pretty clear that this is Voldemort being manipulative to Wormtail, not stemming from some sort of loneliness complex.

Other things that are irritating:

Everything that happens is “convenient.” AAny sort of plot point, character development, anything to drive the story forward is seen as “convenient” to the point that I don’t even know what he means anymore.

“I figured out a plot point and felt proud but then remembered I’m a 24 year old man reading a book meant for children!” - said at least once per episode.

The guests he has on to talk about the books are supposed to be fans but I get the feeling the majority of them maybe read the series one time or just saw the movies because they don’t offer much insight, get facts wrong, don’t correct him when he gets stuff wrong, etc. There is one woman on there who does a very good job but the guests change so she’s not always there.

It’s not a bad podcast, but I get the feeling it’s just not what I would look for in a podcast about HP. I don’t mind talking about plot holes or riffing on some of the goody stuff but for me it just lacks substance about the story itself.

Anyone who’s read this far. I would ask what are some good podcasts that I should look into for my next re-read? I already subscribe to Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. Anything that looks at the growth of the characters and discusses the plot would be great.

Potterless is no. 2 English podcast on German spotify

I just scrolled through the podcast charts on German spotify and Potterless is the second highest ranked English speaking podcast. Yay. It only gets beaten by "The Daily" by The New York Times which is ok, I guess.

[pjo] Upcoming Podcast "The Newest Olympian", from the Creator of Potterless

Hi there. I just wanted to let this sub know about an upcoming podcast called The Newest Olympian. As I said in the title, its a new podcast from the creator of Potterless a podcast about a grown man who never read the Harry Potter books as a kid but did so as an adult. Starting sometime in September hes releasing a new podcast with the same premise but with the PJ books. Hes never read them before and is doing so now. The host is notoriously bad at predicting things (he thought for like 5 episodes that Ludo Bagman was the bad guy in Goblet of Fire). It should be a fun podcast and a way to rexperience the books for the first time again by proxy.

Mike Schubert, the host of Potterless Podcast, will be doing an AMA on Wednesday, SeptembROAR 18th

u/Schubes17 aka Mike Schubert aka the host of Potterless, has finished his first read of the Harry Potter series. Because he is now SPOILER FREE, he can hang out with us here on the best sub on reddit, and he has graciously given us all a full day to harass him.

So hop on your rockets, or take a ride on the back of RUMBLEROAAAAR (scheduled to leave the station at 3am Mars Standard Time) to gather here in r/HarryPotter on Wednesday, September 18th to Ask Mike Anything! That’s what AMA stands for, right? The thread will go up at 11am EST, and Mike will begin answer questions at 12pm EST when I, Rumbleroar, will release him from his cage where I’ve been keeping him for a midnight snack.

The most interesting and thoughtful questions and comments as judged by me, Rumbleroar, will be awarded HOUSE POINTS in a completely arbitrary manner. Show up to compete for second place in the HOUSE CUP! First place will, of course, belong to me. I do wish you all would put on a good show of trying to beat me.

I’ll see you all there!
