My name is Rich Sommer, and I am starting a podcast about board games.

Hello, board game friends. I am entering into the podcast realm, and I'm hoping a few of you will check it out.

It's called "CARDBOARD! with Rich Sommer," and it will be a part of the Wolfpop Network, which is sort of a niche spin-off of the Earwolf Network. There will be an episode every other Thursday starting April 9, and episodes will usually clock in at 45-60 minutes.

The hope is to offer an accessible podcast entry point for new board gamers, and leisure listening for the experienced Board Game Podcast Listener. Like how "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" is fun listening for news junkies, yet accessible enough for the news-ignorant (read: me)? Sort of? Does that make any sense?

Anyway, I hope you'll check it out. There are two sample segments available now at cardboard.wolfpop.com, so you can take it for a spin.

Let me know what you think as it gets going, and I'd love any ideas of segments or people you'd like to hear on the show. Thanks!

Podcast episode about an individual who is blind and plays board games

Hello everyone,

Before I post my link, I was wondering who here would be interested in learning about an individual who is legally blind but plays board games.

Here's a little of his back story:

In his mid 20's my guest (who lives in Republic of North Macedonia) developed an disease that slowly diminished his vision. Since he was a computer engineer he decided that we would make the best of the vision he had left and develop an app to help him read board game cards (Correction: Help him social deduction games. see Edit 2 for more details). This would help him keep up with his friend who have their eyesight and plays board games. To this day he still very much enjoys board games with his friends. He goes into detail in the podcast episode how playing board games had an impact on his life, what it means to him and help get rid of any misconceptions.

If people are interested in listening to this episode, I'll post the link in the comments. If not then disregard this post.

Furthermore, My guest on this episode also has a podcast dedicated to the visually impaired who play board games (once again i'll link his podcast in the comments if it's wanted aswell).

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Edit: I decided to share the episode because has u/philequal mentioned '' It’s definitely a niche within a niche, but why not. Worst case, no one listens. Might as well at least try! ''

If you are interested, my show is called ''Time For Your Hobby'' and this specific episode (Ep.27 Never Bored Of Board Games (Ertay - Blind Board Gamer)) can be found on most plateforms where you can play podcasts, or you can click here to find those platforms: https://timeforyourhobby.wixsite.com/podcast/wix-podcast-player/episode/dd69654b/ep27-never-bored-of-board-games-ertay-blind-board-gamer

As for my guest on the show, his name is Ertay and his podcast is called Sightless Fun: https://sightless.fun/

Edit 2: There's a correction in the phone application my guest created (I made a mistake in describing it's purpose). I am pulling the answer from my guest's response u/ErtaySh (It was my misunderstanding of the exact app he created, sorry about that):

Ah, yes. Well, technically it's not helping with the cards but with a certain mechanic in social deduction games like Secret Hitler and Resistance: Avalon*. Those games have this 'close your eyes' segment in the beginning where all the players close their eyes and the bad guys open their eyes to see their teammates. So, you see how this can be a problem for someone who can't see well.*

To help with that, I coded a simple app that would assign the roles to each player and then show the required information for certain roles. Blind players can plug in headphones to listen to the information. If you want more details about it, you can check a blog post I wrote. I've been considering making a web based version.

Sharing a small journaling podcast about my board games. Share yours!

Hello! I'm a small time (video) games developer and I've started journaling about my board games by doing a podcast. I mostly play solo, though not always, and it's been a a simple way for me to gather my thoughts about games I play and talk a little through their design.

I figured I'd share it publicly if that is OK. It's not intended to be professional nor do I want to make money out of it, I don't expect that much of an audience and that's fine, but I personally enjoy listening to hobbyists podcasts.

We just launched a podcast about thematic and Ameritrash board games: Board Game Barbarians

Hey all, I hope this Monday is finding you well.

My friend Andrew just launched his new podcast, Board Game Barbarians, focusing on Ameritrash and thematic games. The show will sometimes deviate away from thematic games as we do both enjoy the occasional Euro or abstract (or light wargame), but expect lots of talk on miniatures and scenario-based stuff.

You can subscribe directly via RSS here: https://www.boardgamebarbarians.com/feed.xml

Or head to the Podbean page here: www.boardgamebarbarians.com

The show is still under review on iTunes, but should be showing up soon. We also have a Discord for the show and invites available upon request (not sure if I'm allowed to link it directly). Anyway, I hope you like the show! Any feedback is greatly appreciated. This isn't really a for-profit endeavor, but we would still like to make the best show we can.

The Dice Tower Podcast is ending in 10 episodes

Just listened to the latest podcast here. and Tom talks about that the last podcast will be #750 (currently #740).

  • Couple guest hosts in a the last couple episodes

  • Tom has been thinking about ending the podcast for a few years and felt this was a good stopping point as it seemed almost redundant with the same content on YouTube (Top 10 lists, reviews, etc)

  • New audio-only show produced by Eric coming to YouTube soon with the intention of being a new Podcast later. Slightly different than current podcast and more focused on discussions rather than reviews and lists

Too balanced: SUSD podcast discussion

On the last SUSD podcast (episode 155) Quinns and Tom brought up the topic of a game being too balanced. Specifically they were discussing a new Knizia title witchstone (37:40 mark of the podcast). Their criticism is that “all 6 actions will get you approximately the same amount of points, it doesn’t actually matter what you do...it just matters what do you have the opportunity to do the most of. ” To put this in context, they both specialized in different actions but tied for points at the end. Do you agree that games can be too balanced?

Edit: I would recommend people listen to that portion of the podcast because it puts the topic in better context.

Personally, I love games that allow for vastly different scores. Games like Tigris and Euphrates or Equinox can end with large point differences, and I find that exciting. However, I’ve played these games with people who hate this and view it as too punishing (similar to player elimination).

On the other hand games like wingspan or ingenious have all players scoring similarly. To me this isn’t as exciting and repeated plays have a feeling of sameness. To me the balance takes away something from these games.

I've been producing a podcast for a few years now, and today we released a spinoff show all about board games. I would like to share "TableTalk" with you all and would love some feedback!

Hello everyone. Longtime board gamer here. I just wanted to share with everyone my new podcast all about board games and tabletop games.

I have been recording a podcast with my good friend for a few years now which covered movies, video games and pop-culture, but we wanted to branch out into something that I'm really passionate about - board games.

So we've started a bi-weekly show all about board games and tabletop games. We've called it TableTalk and have a plan for the first 6 or 7 episodes.

I wanted to share this with the community here because there's no better place to get people's opinions. I'm sure we all spend countless hours discussing, researching and playing these games and I would really love some feedback on our first episode.

Episode 1 is called "Gateway Games" and the topic is how to introduce games to friends and family who are interested in board games but only really know of the classics (monopoly, scrabble, risk etc) and we give some suggestions on games that we think are good introductions to the world outside of Hasbro.

We're currently posting them under our main show (just to prevent dividing our listeners) But if this gets traction then we plan on having it under it's own entity. Episode 2 will be releasing on May 18th and we'll be discussing how to branch out from beginner games and party games vs board games.

We're on all major podcast platforms. Here are some direct links to the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcast, Amazon, and Stitcher

I would absolutely love any comments and suggestions (good and bad!) We're by no means professionals, but I'm hoping that this can turn into a regular show!
