Question about asm.js

I'm like messing around with javascript games. While this is isn't really new, recent improvements to javascript engines and the rise of certain technologies, it becomes much more feasible.

However, once you start number crunching for logic, javascripts flexible and dynamic nature starts getting in the way of performance. It's pretty much for this reason that Mozilla started working on asm.js and Google started development of Dart.

So, I was wondering, since asm.js is backward compatible, it could be worth the time to make number-crunching functions to take advantage of asm.js.

It is my understanding that asm.js and normal javascript work great side-by-side so, apart from the added complexity for development, is there any real downside for use it?

Scenario's where I think that asm.js could help out are for example; calculating positions, pathfinding, finding closest targets. That kind of things.

Unity in your browser without plugins via asm.js

Pretty big news for Unity today: they now support deploying to WebGL enabled browsers by compiling to asm.js (a subset of Javascript that pretends to be a low-level VM of sorts). This means you can deploy your Unity games without your endusers requiring a plugin. Here's the news snippet from Mozilla:

Makes sense to get rid of the plugin for browsers, most browsers are droping their NPAPI support anyways. Really curious what limitations there are. We've been doing supporting straight Javascript/WebGL/HTML5 with libgdx for over two years, and there's many things you simply can't fix in the browser (audio is still meh, UDP is never gonna be supported, broken WebGL implementations, etc.). Also curious if they'll publish their Mono backend that compiles to asm.js
