You can leave and read comments on Microsoft Office files, PDFs, images, and other files in Google Drive.

Comment on Microsoft Office files

When you leave a comment on Microsoft Office files, the comments will still appear when you open the file in Microsoft Office.

  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Double-click the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file you want to comment on.
  3. At the top right, click Add comment Add comment.
  4. Click the text, cell, or section you want to comment on.
  5. Enter your comment and click Comment.
Comment on PDFs

Comments you make on PDFs can show up in some PDF-viewing apps.

  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Double-click the PDF you want to comment on.
  3. At the top right, click Add comment Add comment.
  4. Select the area you want to comment on.
  5. Enter your comment and click Comment.
Comment on images
  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Double-click the image you want to comment on.
  3. At the top right, click Add comment Add comment.
  4. Click and drag over the area you want to comment on.
  5. Enter your comment and click Comment.
Comment on video, audio, and other files

When you make a comment on video, audio, and other files, the comments will only be available in Google Drive.

  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Double-click the file you want to comment on.
  3. At the top right, click Add comment Add comment.
  4. Click the text, cell, or section you want to comment on.
  5. Enter your comment and click Comment.

Resolve conflicts between versions of the same file 

If someone uploads a new version of the file, it will replace the existing file in Google Drive. Any comments added outside of Google Drive will replace comments made in Drive. Any edits made outside of Google Drive will also remove all resolved or inactive comments.

How sharing affects files

When you share Microsoft Office files, PDFs, images, or other file types with someone, you can choose what they can do with it.

  • View: People can view comments, but can’t make new comments or share the file with others.
  • Comment: People can make comments and suggestions, but can’t change or share the file with others.
  • Edit: People can make comments and changes to the file, accept or reject suggestions, and share the file with others.
