Her name is Aabria Iyengar. Not Abriya.
Their name is Erika Ishii. Not Erica Ishin.
His name is Demi Adejuyigbe. He is a fantastic and brilliant comedian, musician and writer, with a background that stretches from Vine to Gilmore Guys, to Punch Up the Jam, to The Good Place and more. He absolutely is not Gabe Hicks. They don't even look the same.
I've repeatedly seen fans misspelling the names of the cast members of colour. Multiple times now since the Demi clip came out, I've seen people mix him and Gabe Hicks up. This is...you know this is bad, right? I'm a person of colour who's often had people not bother to learn how to spell my (Irish) name, or been confused with the only other person of colour in a workplace, and it's deeply uncomfortable.
Let's put some respect on the names of the cast - especially the cast members of colour.
Lots of love, A tired fellow fan
ETA: here's the thing. Since this has been up, I've seen a wave of racial microaggressions, people who insist that they don't see colour, and lots and lots and lots of down votes for saying that refusing to spell a person's name correctly when you see it all the time is somewhat disrespectful.
So...I think I'm likely done. I'm not interested in being told it's not that deep and to touch grass over and over and over, when this is a documented structural issue. And I'm not that interested in having my inbox flooded with angry angry angry people. And, honestly, I...think I'm probably just done.
For those of you for whom this struck a chord: peace and love.
For everyone else who thinks it's aggressively okay to misspell names you see pretty much all the time, but utterly ignored the rest of the post...perhaps a little self-examination is in order, yeah?
Bye, Dropout.
