Podcasts about music/musicians/music history?

Hello all! I have recently just enjoyed the ‘Wind of Change’ series by Pineapple Street Studios, and it’s sparked an interest for learning more about music, the story behind songs and musicians in general!

Not necessarily conspiracy based, (though I’m always down for a conspiracy if you have a cool recommendation for that too).

I like all genres, any suggestions about cool stories in the music world are welcome. Thanks!

Edit: Wow, thank you so much for every suggestion! I have added each one to my library, and couldn’t be more excited for all the new stuff! Thanks heaps :)

Are there any podcasts that are like Ken Burns’s Country Music mini series but in podcast form? It can be any genre. It doesn’t matter. I’d probably prefer something other than country since I have that mini series, and I’ve listened to Dolly Parton’s America.

I’d prefer it just cover a genre of music, but I’m not opposed to it just covering one specific artist either. I loved Dolly Parton’s America, and another favorite podcast of mine is Take It Away which covers Paul McCartney solo. They’re doing George Harrison now.

Seeking to interview practicing shaman with strong experience for a podcast about music

I am writing a book about music and my research has put me in touch with the shamanic use of music. I would like to have a discussion about this with someone who actively practices shamanism, especially within a community setting and makes use of music in their practice (drumming, singing, dancing).

My preference would be for someone who has learned the craft of shamanism from a family lineage or grew up in a setting wherein shamanism was an integrated thing.

I'd be interested in talking about your initiatory experience, your tradition, your usage of the the craft of shamanism, your role within your community and your use of music.

DM me if interested. I can make sample episodes available to you and provide more details on the project.

Podcasts about music?

Hey!

I'm looking for more Song Exploder-esque podcasts that are focused on talking about music itself, rather than just playing new songs or discussing the pop culture surrounding music.

I love hearing about the technical aspect of music or the process of creating songs, but Song Exploder is the only podcast I've found that delves into those technicalities. I've tried Sound Opinions and Rolling Stone's podcast but they're not really up my ally, or they focus again on the culture around the music rather than the music itself.

Recs please!

What is Music Podcast

Hey REM fans. There's a podcast called What is Music who are starting a full "deep dive" into REMs discography. They did Radiohead, who I am slightly obsessed with, and it was utterly brilliant. They spent around 3 episodes of 90 mins each on every album and also did live shows etc. It took around 18 months I think.

First episode is out and they generally put one out each week. Would highly recommend.

Im looking for educational, informative, almost tutorial like podcasts about the basics and intricacies of digital song production: using DAW, mixing, mastering, tips, even just interviews with producers giving their knowledge or stories about music they’ve produced. Also more podcasts like Song Exploder.

Thanks!

Would you be interested in a podcast about music making?

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all doing well!

Well, I had a really cool idea for a podcast about independent music making, home recording, ... . I really like to listen to podcasts, but have never really heard of one about these topics. Basic idea was to showcase a song or 2 per show and maybe interview the artist, talk about how the recorded their song/album, talk about different techniques, amazing affordable gear, and other cool stuff.

Anyways, wanted to get your feedback on it. Would you listen to it? Am I making a huge mistake and there already exist a whole bunch of them?

Also, if I do decide to go through with it would probably need someone else on it, maybe 1 or 2 people, for co-hosts. So, if you are interested message me!

Cheers!

Seeking an interview with Muslim(s) for my podcast about music. Interested in Sufism and also would love a conversation with Muslims able to explain why their faith considers music not permissible.

Or really anyone who is anti-music for religious reasons would be a welcome addition to my podcast. My podcast is called music meaning and mystery (www.musicmeaningandmystery.ca). You will see by my work and podcasts that my case is that music is a bridge to the transcendent/divine realm(s). Hence my interest in Sufism.

I have thus far interviewed musicians coming from various genres and also various experts and enthusiasts from different religious backgrounds. For instance, I interviewed a Buddhist trans woman, a Houngan (voodoo priest), an alchemist, a Catholic (episode releasing soon), and an orthodox Christian who is also an ethnomusicologist (releasing soon).

Though my podcast is decidedly pro-music, I feel it is important for me to amplify voices differing from mine and understand those perspectives. This is the reason I wish to interview someone about the non-permissibility of music. I realize this may appear intimidating, to go on a podcast to express a dissident viewpoint. But if you listen to my show, you will see that I am committed to open dialog and to avoid interrupting my guests. You will see that I ask questions to facilitate my guest expressing themselves and I always seek to elevate the guest as much as possible. Though I would disagree with a guest who considers music unsacred, I would gladly set aside myself to listen to the guest. I would also be willing to respect an anti-music (for religious reasons) guest by removing the usual intro and outro music.

I want to understand your perspective and become less ignorant of it.

I am selectively releasing a podcast about music and experimentation. Your feedback would be appreciated!

The podcast is called "Close to Making Sense"

link

My experimental bandmate Tony and I threw ourselves into this podcast project spontaneously and we are figuring it out as we go. So any/all criticism is welcome and helpful. With your help, we will be able to improve the podcast before full release.

  • did you like the topics?

  • are we annoying to listen? How so?

  • do you like the podcast name?

  • what topics would you like us to discuss in the upcoming episodes?

  • are we too ugly for video?

  • the episodes are pretty short, would you prefer longer episodes?

For now the show it's just available on youtube because it's easy to limit the amount of people I release it to (by uploading as unlisted). We are working on a 10-12 episode long "season zero" wherein we experiment with different approaches and topics. Our intent is to improve and then release season 1 on all the expected platforms (iTunes, stitcher etc).

Thanks for your help!

I made a podcast about music festivals, Electric Forest the favorite

Hi ladies and gents!

I created a podcast a few months a back, where I interview people who have interesting stories that I think are worth sharing. I've been wanting to interview my friend who is super into the festival scene, he went to a total of 15 last summer. Electric Forest (by far) was his favorite. We recorded it recently, and I thought you might find it interesting or relatable. We talk about How he got into it, why he likes it so much, and specifics of different festivals. It's short, only about 45min, but if you wanna to give it a listen, I think you might like it. The episode is titled Mike Robrock AKA Big White and can be found on iTunes or Soundcloud from the links below:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/average-with-steven-smith/id999166383?mt=2

I hope you find it relatable and entertaining, and if you have any feedback I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Steven Smith

Lane should have had a music podcast in AYITL

Let me start by saying that I agree with the fact that Lane's band need not have turned out to be wildly successful for her to have a fulfilling life. However, I do think that her individuality was completely ignored in AYITL. Lane as host for a podcast about music makes so much sense to me. She would have the flexibility to plan and record episodes in her free time, she'd definitely have a unique take on things, and she would know a lot of up and coming artists through the gigs her band plays. I feel like this is certainly an interesting possibility to round out her revival character, what do you guys think?

Why the dislike for Drones?

Today our lengthy Muse podcast reached Drones. It seems to come with a bit of a reputation. A bit of a black sheep in their discography and often mentioned as, if not their worst, then one of their weaker efforts.

We're only on Part 1 this week, but so far our reactions on the podcast have been a bit more upbeat than you might expect.

So why the hate for Drones? What is it about the album that you think gives it that rep?

EDIT: Wow, some amazing discussion in here! For more like it check out our podcast: What Is Music?: A Music Podcast About Music. We've done every Muse album up to Drones. Very long deep dives!
