Ghosts of Tabor -- Focusing on PSVR2 now

Looks like Scott (CEO at combat waffle studios) just posted this on discord this morning. Tabor will NOT be for everyone, but I play a lot on PCVR and am excited to get my hands on the PSVR2 version.

A lot of racism online?

Im new to the vr scene and I was playing some onward last night and in multiple games with different people there was soooo much racism towards an African guy, like straight up racial slurs. I was flabbergasted I’ve never experienced it like this! Is it a VR thing? Or a US thing? (Was playing on US server probably because of low player count) maybe even an onward thing?

In my years of gaming PlayStation and Xbox on EU server I’ve never experienced it at all. Felt really bad for the guy he was such a nice dude and a great player and he just ignored it.

VR legs returning, finally had a blast!

My PSVR2 arrived in the mail about two weeks ago. I've been hopping in for about 15-30m runs in misc. games every other night and dealing with some mid-level motion sickness. I'm no stranger to this, as I used to give motion sickness advice to newcomers on PSVR1 years ago, and knew it was just a matter of time before I could manage myself.

Today I hopped into synapse and rocked it for over an hour. Without the distraction of nausea, I feel like I was finally appreciate the hardware in this thing. Eye tracking, headset rumble, haptic triggers, finger detection... everything is on full display in that game and it was cool af.

I still ended up with a bit of sickness by the end, and I suspect the forehead pressure is a trigger. I've got a glob cluster in the mail to help with that, and a pair of rock lense covers so I don't have to be so timid with my glasses.

There are still more VR games I've added to my library that I haven't fired up yet, and I cant wait to get into them.

OVRDARK: A Do Not Open story on PSVR2 - First Impressions

OVRDARK: A Do Not Open story on PSVR2 - First Impressions

I have uploaded gameplay from my fresh experience with the game here if you want to see how it looks / plays. My first impressions are shared below:

Based on my limited time with it, I do recommend playing OVRDARK: A Do Not Open story on PSVR2, but you should know this is a direct sequel to flat game called Do No Open (available on Steam & PS4 / PS5) and I think the start of the sequel VR game would certainly be spoiler for how the original game concluded (canon ending anyway). Everything that follows will have some spoiler for the original game, but I'll try to be very vague in my descriptions while providing what I think is important to know for people thinking about playing the sequel in VR without having burden of playing original game first.

In the original Do Not Open game, you play as Mike Goreng, who is a scientist trapped in his grand Victorian mansion of a home that he inherited from his aunt after her suicide. Your main task was to find your wife and daughter while solving escape room puzzles (that would change randomly between playthroughs) while being hunted and experiencing bizarre events set to classic horror atmosphere. Your goal was to solve puzzles, collect items, and unravel mystery of the mansion before time runs out or being caught by the lurking threat.

In the sequel VR game, you play as George Foster who is like-a-brother friend of Mike Goreng that goes to the same grand Victorian mansion looking for Mike Goreng amidst backdrop of city that is experiencing some kind of infection outbreak and you are interested in saving your friend & his family (wife & daughter) plus recover the scientific research that might help city with the outbreak. As you play, you receive calls from Lexa that helps give you more backdrop about bigger issue happening in the city as infection is spreading and everything about the game just reminds me of Resident Evil Raccoon City, except you aren't facing zombies / monsters as you mainly focus on escape room puzzles (static, not random in the VR sequel) until the game introduces you to the lurking threat of the sequel (30:00) and then you have to use some stealth to avoid being caught & killed going forward while continuing to solve puzzles and unravel mystery of what happened in past (no time pressure).

I don't think anybody needs to have played the original game because of the way the sequel starts and how the game is unfolding in what I have played. I feel like it is providing the full canon story of the original game, while advancing the narrative of worsening situation of an outbreak. Everything about the game, the design of the mansion, the atmosphere, the types of puzzles and tone reminds me of original Resident Evil (in a good way), except you you will never get a gun or need herbs. You will save progress at tape recorder stations similar to typewriter stations in Resident Evil, so you will always know when you can stop and resume if you get to one of those.

The graphics are not at the level of MADiSON VR (another PSVR2 horror game I've played recently), but they are good. The game is using Gaze Foveated Rendering, but there are times where I felt it takes the game some time to recognize whether you are looking at something in foreground vs background so you can see the resolution increasing on object you are looking at while you are looking at it. Same for the subtitles which are well implemented and easy to read, but every now and then it can take an extra second or so before the game recognizes you are looking at the text and makes it sharper for you. I also think the game is not running 90-120 fps and is using reprojection. This can be observed most prominently by me in how the subtitles text moves around the screen as you look around.

The sound / voice acting is fine, but the soundtrack / sound effects in particular are at such higher quality in MADiSON VR, that it feels much less effective here in creating horror mood / atmosphere.

The game is using haptic feedback in controllers when pushing giant marble statues against the floor and it is also using headset haptics when you get attacked by the lurking threat in this game if you fail to be stealthy, but it is not at the level of polish I've experienced in MADiSON VR, and it isn't present at all in so many interactions / circumstances where it really should be.

Even VR Interactivity where MADiSON VR has clear room to improve, is actually a little better than OVRDARK providing full arms, more consistent use of haptic feedback, and more stable interactions with things you can interact with. That said, OVRDARK provides more to do including playing Pool (badly), throwing Darts, etc.

The game provides limited VR comfort options defaulting to snap turns which can be changed to smooth and aside that you can increase speed of turning from default of 10 up to 50. After trying 50 and 30 I dropped it down to 20 as my sweet spot. It doesn't provide option for teleport and doesn't provide any vignette / tunneling / blinders.

The game features a Platinum trophy which seems highly obtainable for anyone that is thorough about collectibles and then is more mindful not to die / fail attempts on 2nd playthrough.

Clearly on technical polish and especially the art of creating horror atmosphere, MADiSON VR is a step above which makes OVRDARK feel worse in comparison, but I actually like the gameplay of OVRDARK more. I find the mansion in OVRDARK more visually interesting to explore with grander scale and all the art decorations and I like that everything feels more grounded with puzzles that are more logical and intuitive accepting that this is some weird old mansion with many secrets to unravel to be able to explore it more fully.
