How are people okay with only equity without cash?

I applied and got a response back for a Tech Lead role at a 1 year old startup. The caveat was that the CEO mentioned that this a equity only role and no cash will be paid during my 1st year there. 2nd year onwards 'some cash' will be paid. And according to him there are 60+ people with him on the same boat. Apparently they are funded and have runway but they want the founding team to have skin in the game and that their risk should be as much as the investors.

I dont think that's a valid argument as for the investors its just 1 investment not their entire earning. What am I missing here? How did they manage to get 60+ people onboard with this?

I still hate coding even though I am a CS student. It makes me feel sick.

The thing is that I am stuck with coding. I don't like it, but I do like the idea that techies get paid so well in long term which non technical jobs can't. Maybe I am just lazy or I understand things late which makes it hard for me to code. When I first started web dev, it took me a full day to understand a simple line of javascript, let alone making a full website.

The thing is that I love web development, I love playing around with css, styling, colors and such, but when i comes to code a website, i feel anxious, a feeling of sickness comes up.

everytime i have to code in any language( currently i know c, java , js and little bit of python), i struggle with making the machine undestand what i am trying to say. Maybe I am tired because I never had a mentor to guide me as I had to teach myself everything. Maybe it's built up mental fatigue to see all those monotonous languages. College education did nothing, if i had to be honest

If i consider coding as problem solving at the end of the day, I really am bad at it.

Why aren't there any unions in IT industry to protect employees?

Why aren't there any unions in IT industry to protect employees?

In the past couple years, we've seen so many scary lay offs and now a developer job is considered very poorly job secure. And these people laid off find themselves in a helpless situation where they are in no place to negotiate with the company. (Whether an MNC or start up). Why don't we have unions to protect the employee rights like other industries?
