There are a ton of examples, but one that comes to mind is "Scotty Doesn't Know", the Lustra song used for the movie "Eurotrip". Lustra's song has an iconic guitar riff and is fairly well known worldwide, but not many people remember that movie, and I was wondering if there are any other examples of songs made for a movie that eclipsed the original in popularity.

Like in the movie Tropic Thunder, what if they actually made that fake movie into a real movie. I’m not saying I want that movie, but was discussing this with a friend and we both wondered if that has been done before. We both were thinking of movies where they were making a fake movie and it spiralled into this. So I ask you people of Reddit, has this been done before.

Edit: So this idea we had was a fictional behind the scenes making of movie (not documentary) of a fake movie. Then that fake movie would be released after the BTS movie.

The more obscure the better. Films that are just... weird. I am keeping this fairly vague.

I don't necessarily mean disturbing or creepy though those are on the table too. Nor do I mean shocking or provocative, though again those are welcome too. I am looking for those films that are unsettling and strange for any number of reasons. Bonus points if the weirdness isn't intentional but due to very strange choices by the director, or weird because of highly unconventional content/techniques rather than intentional plot elements.

A good example is anything by Jodorowsky. That man was the master of the weird. His films are weird from a content standpoint but also from an intrinsic standpoint, with the composition itself giving you the creeps.

Weirdest films you have ever seen?

One of the decidedly lesser J-horror remakes of the 00s (and a missed opportunity since Wes Craven was originally supposed to direct and has a co-writing credit on it), this does have one scene more than halfway through its runtime when Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder are in a diner discussing what's going on regarding the ongoing and increasingly apocalyptic invasion of ghosts. While they're talking in a booth, an older gentleman can be seen at the counter with his back to them, out of focus and seemingly an extra. But then, after Bell and Somerhalder say none of this makes sense, the gentleman at the counters turns around, says it makes perfect sense and starts rambling about how it's the end of the world. And then you realize, "Holy shit, is that BRAD DOURIF?!" And indeed it is. He's only in it for the one scene, but Dourif's sudden appearance as a Crazy Ralph-style doomcrier is completely unexpected and very welcome. For that one scene, the film is awesome. Thank you, Brad.

My pick would be "Shame" by Mitski. There's a tense, anxious violin moment in the middle of the song that makes me feel genuine dread. I can imagine it being pairing well with a suspenseful scene!

What's your pick? I'd also love to hear about any songs you think were used really well in a horror movie or scene.

Personally, I love all kinds of movies from all time periods, but my gf has this unreasonable disdain for any movie that’s “old” and in black and white. What would be a good movie to watch with her that might show her that even old black and white movies can be good? I’ve been thinking maybe Psycho, A Face in the Crowd, or 12 Angry Men. What say youse?

Comedy sequels that are better than the first movie?

There are certainly a number of go to canonical answers for dramatic or action movie sequels that are better than the original, but when it comes to comedies I'm having a hard time thinking of comedies that fit this topic specifically. Is there a go to obvious comedy sequel that outshines the original?

What is your favorite Director's/Alternate Cut of a film?

On my podcast over the next two months I'm going to be talking about extended cuts of films, why they matter, how they have become widely available with changing technology, and which the best ones are.

Some of my personal favorites are; Amadeus, Kingdom of Heaven, Blade Runner, Alien3, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Spider-Man 3: Editor's Cut, The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut, and of course The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

But I want to hear from you guys, which are your favorites?

No this is not a parody film from 2007. This is an upcoming film set to come out in 2 DAYS. In the year 2024. Is this a throwback to that awful time in comedy? A parody of a parody? I honestly don’t know. Django is in it though 🤷

I’ve taken hundreds of “General Meetings” for film and TV - I made a video that goes over everything they don’t teach you.

If you're not familiar, a general meeting in screenwriting is a sit-down with an executive—someone from a studio, network, producer, or director. It's a chance to chat and make a connection. These meetings have been pivotal in my journey. They took me from being just a represented writer to one who has been staffed, sold pilots, and even had a movie made.

But let me be honest: I've had way more failures than successes. I've over-talked, tried too hard, and stumbled more times than I can count. Through conversations with fellow writers, I've realized that while everyone has their own style, the core of these meetings is pretty much the same for everyone.

To help you navigate these waters, I've broken down the process into five steps and included a section on how to brand yourself. I genuinely hope this helps.

I was watching Primer and got all confused. Has that happened to you? Like whether with a particular scene or the whole movie?

I'm reminded of Homer Simpson watching Lynch's Twin Peeks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrH-UpdyMJ8

Like Homer, I felt Primer was brilliant and yet I found myself lost. I think it's the editing. It's done on purpose I'm sure but doesn't really make it easier for the first time viewer. At least in my opinion.

What movie do you love but only watch once or twice a year, because it‘s too „heavy“?

I just rewatched „The Devil All The Time“, a favorite of mine. Watched it four times over the span of three years. Though it’s a „fancy“ cast (Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård) it dosen‘t outshine the story. But too me it‘s heavy on the soul and every time after I watching it I‘m stuck in a rabbit hole of all kinds of youtube critics, interpretations, etc. Almost like my mind needs to exhale and needs a way to calm down. „2001: a space odysseey“ has the same effect on me. And I love it! To me these are no movies I watch just like that, to pass time or have it on in the background. I‘m fully invested, sitting upright the whole time :D

Do you have a movie that makes you feel the same way? A movie that‘s so weirdly unsettling and satisfying at the same time, you can‘t stop thinking about it for days?

Famous cases of movie actors playing multiple roles by themselves?

So I bring up this particular matter as I was looking at a clip of the 1996 remake of the Nutty Professor, and something that I still have a hard time believing was that almost every single member of the Klump family was played by Eddie Murphy himself, (except for the kid) and I say this as I don't know how he managed to pull it off so well as he has good performances for every single character in the dinner scene for instance.

However, regarding the trope, there have sometimes been criticisms of it, such as the third Austin Powers movie as sometimes when I read the criticism that fans of the original film had with it, the largest criticism is that Mike Myers is playing too many characters in the 3rd entry as he is basically fighting with himself with over 4 different characters, so just wanted to get that out of the way.
