So storytime...I used to work for a major retailer in a call centre. When I first started working there, I received an email from a disgruntled customer who was spouting racist venom about a black security guard in one of our stores. I replied to the email, and was later pulled up on it by my manager. They explained that this customer emails us all the time and the company does not reply to her any more. I checked the history of contact between the customer and the company, and saw hundreds of emails, complaining about this black security guard over and over. I told my manager I would no longer reply and thought nothing of it further. I worked there for several years, and her emails would pop up every so often. I'd log them on the system and not reply as no further action was to be taken due to the levels that she was harassing this company and security guard. I eventually left the company as I got another job
Anyway, I watched Baby Reindeer recently. I decided to message a friend, an ex colleague of the previously mentioned company, about the show to ask them what they thought about it, because it seemed like something they'd be into. Immediately, they called me. The conversation went something like this:
Friend: Oh my god, that Baby Reindeer has sent the whole office into a meltdown.
Me: Why?
Friend: Do you remember years ago we had that customer who would always email us racist stuff about the security guard in one of our stores?
Me: Yeah?
Friend: Remember what her name was?
Me: No..?
Friend: Fiona Harvey
Me: Oh my god!
Friend: Yeah... it's her!
So yeah, I actually interacted with her. If I recall she gave me a 1 star rating for my email reply.

I never caught it until just now, but the seeds of how Maddie ended up with Doug and stayed with him so long were present in the opening scenes when she was patching up Evans knee after he fell off the bike. Their parents were arguing about the bike and he was listening, when she went into his room he said, "they're really mad."
Maddie: "They're not mad, they're...upset."
Evan: "They were yelling. A lot."
Maddie: "Sometimes people do that when they care too much. They overreact and they feel bad about it. You're not in trouble."
Then later dad takes Buck to get a new bike and says hey maybe we'll get some ice-cream. Over compensating for their reaction to his fall and the bike.
Buck: "They're really not mad."
Maddie: "Told you, that's just what happens when they worry."
Buck: "Yeah."
His take away from that moment: If people get mad, it's because they care and they'll pay attention to me to apologize for overreacting.
Then he turns into a dare devil constantly getting hurt and putting himself deliberately in harms way to get them to show it.
Maddie's reaction to her dad says she expected something like that to happen. She's used to the overreaction and the "apology" that comes after - which is likely a pattern Doug also had. Get angry at her, tell her it's for her own good, then shower her with affection after.

Idk what I’m missing. Maybe I’m just dumb. But I liked her presence. I liked the intimacy of their scenes & I genuinely felt sad when Carmy not only breaks her heart, but his own heart.
