Visiting Kigali • Visiting Kigali

Hi everyone! Me and my boyfriend are going to Kigali for just over 2 weeks at the start of September. It’s our first time visiting and we’ve heard so much amazing things and we’d love to potentially purchase a property there (obviously we’re visiting first to test the waters)

I wanted to ask a few questions:

  1. Can anyone recommend any reliable real estate agents? We’ve connected with a few but it would be good to get some more recommendations.

  2. Which bank is the best for expats? In terms of user friendliness and accessibility. I’ve heard good reviews about bank of Kigali?

  3. Good supermarkets? I have a lot of allergies so I can’t always rely on restaurant food to cater to them so I prefer to cook, are there any decent supermarkets?

  4. Are there any apps that are a must have? Like the Rwanda version of Bolt, Uber, Deliveroo etc?

Lastly if anyone is around during September and wants to connect let me know! I’m always up for networking.

Indian tech entrepreneur planning to setup a base in Rwanda • Indian tech entrepreneur planning to setup a base in Rwanda

I'm an Indian tech entrepreneur looking to setup my company's African base in Kigali. I've been to Kigali many times on business - in addition to Nairobi, Kampala, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg - and I've found Kigali to be the best in terms of ease of doing business, high speed internet, safety, cleanliness and response from govt officials. I'm US educated, and founder of a successful tech venture that has offices in India, Singapore and the US, and I strongly believe in Rwanda's and Africa's growth potential as a market as well as a source of tech talent.

I'd like to request Rwandans in this sub to help me understand the following:

  1. What do Rwandans in general think of Indians? Opinions about Indians in East/Southern Africa are mixed, several Indians living in Africa for over a century run businesses here but tend to not assimilate with local communities, which has caused trouble in the past in countries like Uganda. I don't have any family connections in Africa, and I'd like to know how are Indians perceived in Rwanda today?

  2. How should I go about hiring Rwandan tech / managerial professionals for my company? Should I advertise online or should I reach out to universities etc.?

  3. What are some dos and donts that I should be aware of while doing business in Rwanda, in terms of work culture and making personal connections?

  4. What are the best online / offline resources for me to pickup basic Kinyarwandan?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance

Rwand'around • Rwand'around

Hi! In a month's time I am going with a friend to Rwanda for 10 days.

As we're travelling on a budget, we will skip what everyone expect us to do - Gorilla Safari - as it is way out of our budget. We're mainly looking for experiencing nature by cycling or hiking. For instance, we're considering cycling the Congo Nile Trail but it's rather difficult to figure out where to rent bikes, the best way to get from one town to another etc.

Any practical tips on how to get around Rwanda, especially for doing the Congo Nile Trail?
What other places are worth visting?
Any tips on how to adapt to "when in Rome"?

Thankful for any tips!

Waste Free 23: Leading the Way to a Cleaner Tomorrow! • Waste Free 23: Leading the Way to a Cleaner Tomorrow!

Are you looking for reliable, eco-friendly waste management solutions? Look no further! At Waste Free in ‘23, we are committed to making the world a cleaner, greener place.

Waste Free in ‘23 started a little over a year ago in Nairobi to support and teach communities how to efficiently manage their waste to conserve natural resources, repurpose "waste" into valuable products, eliminate trucking, dumping, and burning waste, and create full-time jobs within communities.

Using a heat press and molds, you can melt PE/Soft plastics without fire or smoke and create sellable products like bowls, bins, and more! If we can spread these circular recycling methods worldwide, we can eliminate waste for good and create full-time jobs all over the world.

By participating in our fundraising opportunities, you can directly contribute to cleaning up communities and educating others on the environmental benefits of proper waste management. With only 10% of plastic worldwide being recycled and 30% of waste being mismanaged, your involvement can help us achieve our goal of recycling 100% of plastics and creating a zero-waste Earth.

So far, we've helped over 10,000 homes become waste-free and have created nearly 4,000 community jobs.

The website is a valuable resource, containing several guides on how to get started yourself. Your interest and help are crucial to our mission. If you're ready to make a difference, we encourage you to email us!

I wanted to know if there are some tips and advice as a visitor should know before hand, like, what is the rule of the road since I will be driving to and from with a Kenyan Number plate, foods to try out, places to avoid, how to conduct myself, does majority of the population speak English or Swahili? How are the police ? Attractions to look out for or even visit, hows the nightlife? Any particular laws i should be aware of, Any information will be greatly appreciated, shukran.

If things work for us, we gain from it, we celebrate. If they don’t work for us, we don’t blame anybody. • “We have to make choices, even difficult choices. We don’t follow rules, we follow choices.
