Learn how to manage a space with in-line threading

Manage thread notifications

After you start a thread, you can adjust how and when you’re notified of new messages.

To review or change notification settings for a space with in-line threading:
  1. By the name of the space, click the Down arrow Drop down arrow.
  2. Select notifications Notifications Active.
  3. Select an option for notifications:
    • All: Notifications for new messages and replies to threads you follow.
      • Tip: This is the default setting.
    • Following: Notifications for replies and threads you follow and @mentions.
    • None: No notifications, just a dot if you’re @mentioned.

Tip: When you follow a thread in a space, you’re notified with a red dot whenever there’s activity in that thread. You can view the number of unread messages next to each thread in a space.

Turn off message history for a space

You can turn off message history for all threads in a space or for replies in a thread within a space.

  • If message history is off when the thread is started, the thread and all replies are deleted 24 hours after they’re sent.
  • If message history is on when the thread is started and message history is then turned off, replies in that thread are deleted 24 hours after they’re sent.

Delete a space

Important:

  • You can only delete a space if you’re the space creator.
  • When you delete a space, all messages and tasks in the space are deleted. Permissions on Drive files are removed, but the file isn’t deleted.
  • Once a space is deleted, you can’t recover it.
  • You may not be able to delete a space on your work or school account.
  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. Open the space you want to delete.
  3. At the top, next to the space name, click Down arrow Drop down arrow and then Delete this space Delete and then Delete.
