What are some words you know are borrowed from Italian? I was scrolling on TikTok and saw a guy talk about making Sugo and couldn’t believe sugo is a borrowed word😭

I'm getting a new cat and I want to give her a cute little Amharic name, but I'm not fluent (just know enough to get by politely but can't hold a real convo). I also want it to "sound cute" in an English context too.

Some ideas I had:

• dabo (cuz cats sit in the loaf position. but I've heard this is also a euphemism for lady bits so idk lol)

• what's the female version of gashe? (I have another cat, and the new one will be oldest/is middle aged so I thought that could be cute)

• Tahsas, since that's the month I'll adopt her in but I don't think it sounds that cute

• kholo, cus she has little marks on her mouth that look like pieces of kholo she's eating lmao

• ሪዝ for the same reason lol (but I can't find an example of it being said aloud so I'm not sure how it sounds)

I was born in America, my mom is fully Ethiopian, immigrated here from Ethiopia, and my dad is half. I grew up around my habesha cousins and family here who speak Amharic, but my mom never taught me. Where can I learn Amharic?

I am of Ethiopian descent with parents whose first language is Amharic. I can understand most conversational Amharic when people are speaking with each other or to me but I can't speak Amharic. As a kid, I wasn't encouraged to speak Amharic as my parents were told that teaching a kid to speak 2 languages would confuse my brother and me (🙄). They still spoke to me in Amharic at the time because they weren't completely fluent in English during my childhood. Over the years as their English proficiency significantly increased, less and less Amharic was spoken in my household, and my understanding and fluency diminished to the point where I can only respond to Amharic in English. I've noticed that there are also times when I won't be able to understand 5-10 seconds of a conversation due to gaps in my vocabulary. I feel stuck in my understanding.

I do, however, have a bit of experience with recognizing the letters of the alphabet. I can't make out specific letters but I know the base sound a letter will have if that makes sense (thanks to Sunday school.) As a receptive bilingual who also can kinda make out letters, how long would it take me to reach full proficiency, in both speaking and writing, but primarily with speaking?

Hello everyone! So I met my father for the first time about 6 years ago and want to connect more deeply with my culture. Mom is white so I never grew up around the Ethiopian side of my family. I really want to be able to speak to some of my aunts, uncles, and cousins in Amharic but I don't know where to start. I live pretty far from all of them so it's hard to even practice it regularly. Is there some kind of app similar to Duolingo that helps teach Amharic?

My girlfriend is from ethiopia and I really want to learn Amharic, but I have no idea where to start. It seems so overwhelming and different.

I have no experience with semetic languages (I speak Norwegian, german and english) so I just wonder if anyone here has any advice.
