Adam Yates to be co-captain on UAE

According to Danish TV2 Adam Yates will be co-captain with Pogacar.

Google Translated version:

Jonas Vingegaard's biggest rival for the Tour de France victory, Tadej Pogacar, gets Adam Yates as co-captain.

UAE Team Emirates is fielding two team captains in the form of Tadej Pogacar and Adam Yates for the upcoming Tour de France.

This is stated by UAE team manager Mauro Gianetti three days before the start of the Tour in Bilbao.

The reason is that the two-time Tour winner Pogacar crashed and broke his wrist two months ago, which creates uncertainty about the Slovenian's physical condition.

  • Adam is not only there to support Tadej. He is our co-captain this summer, says Mauro Gianetti according to cyclingnews.com to the French newspaper L'Equipe.

Is it just spin?

The question then is whether, with the announcement, the UAE team is trying to trick the competition into the overall Tour victory. Gianetti reports.

  • We really have no choice. Tadej has had five weeks where he has not been able to train on the road. There are no miracles in cycling. You have to get your kilometres, says Gianetti.

Although Tadej Pogacar became the Slovenian champion in both line race and single start at the weekend, the UAE boss is unsure if the form is good enough for three weeks of stage races.

  • He has worked hard and we have a lot of faith in him, but we are not sure of anything. He became Slovenian champion, and he did so in fine style. But that does not mean that he is 100 percent ready for Saturday, says Gianetti.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won last year's Tour de France after a tough duel with Pogacar.

The Slovenian's co-captain, 30-year-old Briton Adam Yates, finished ninth in last year's Tour.

How well would Adam Yates have done if he was riding for himself?

I think it's pretty impressive to finish 3rd overall and only ~11 mins back since he was riding for Pogacar the whole tour, so I'm curious, what do other people think about how Adam Yates would have done if he had his own team as strong as Jumbo and UAE, all supporting him?

I think he could have been up there with Vinge and Pogacar, but I am also British so I'm probably slightly biased 😅
