ABZÛ's port is amazing

I was a bit worried after playing through RIME, which was poorly ported.

In ABZÛ everything run smoothly even in handheld, I haven't noticed any big frame drop or freeze after a 30min session.

I really recommend it if you like contemplative games, its swimming mechanics feel amazing and its universe is beautiful.

Edit: it even supports video recording, here's an example recorded while playing in handheld mode.

Did they really avoid saying "Tiamat" because of possible "WotC/DnD is going to teleport their lawyers to us"? Aren't Tiamat and Apsu (Abzû) from the ancient Mesopotamian religion?

Abzû, a stunning and gorgeous underwater experience

I went into the game with low expectations after not being particularly impressed with Journey and Gris which pretty much fall into the same category but having completed it a few minutes ago I can safely say that it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played.

There is very little gameplay and the narrative is told through the visuals and the audio; I admit I failed to pick many of the elements in the game but I was certainly blown away by the visuals and it's short, very short, which is becoming more and more a plus for me in recent times.

I strongly recommend three components to get a 100% experience out of Abzû: headphones, a dark room and a lighting system that actively adjusts both brightness and color based upon picture content, most commonly known as Ambilight on Philips TV (this is an example of what I mean).

I'm glad developers Giant Squid are working on a new game, Pathless, which I'll certainly keep an eye on.

I have depression, so even gaming doesn't feel that good, but I was moved by this experience.

Just wanted to share.

Just finished 'ABZÛ'.

Where can I play it?: Steam, GOG, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Background information: Developed by Giant Squid Studios and released in 2016.

What I played it on: Dell G7 Laptop

Controller type: Mouse and keyboard

Hours played: 2

Mods used: None

Bug report: None

Main Review: Abzu is an underwater adventure game where you play a diver exploring a vast ocean interacting with its plant and animal life. (that's about as non-spoilery as I can give for a description to this game) According to wikipedia the game is heavily influenced by Sumerian mythology and the cosmic ocean myth.

For a game that takes only two hours to beat, I have to say that this is one of my favorite gaming experiences in recent memory. It would be easy to break this game down and say it is essentially an underwater simulator but it is way way more than that.

Abzu is incredibly immersive and relentlessly beautiful. It has enough of a story to keep you going with your exploration as you get lost in what feels like the incredible vastness of the planet's oceans. This game benefits the most when played on a big screen TV and with the graphics set to max. I would argue that it isn't even worth playing without doing both because you miss out on a lot.

The soundscape throughout the game is really amazing as well and while it isn't necessary I would even recommend wearing headphones while playing this game to immerse yourself deeper into the experience.

There isn't much more I want to say about this game without dipping into spoiler territory other than that everyone should play Abzu at some point. I don't own a VR headset but if I did this would probably be the first game I played on it.

DLC Review:

None

TL;DR

Pros:

  • Gorgeous

  • Immersive

  • Great soundscape

  • Fun exploration

Cons:

  • Doesn't seem worth it unless you can have the graphics set to max

Overall, this game does not over stay its welcome. What it does offer, it perfects and I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a short exploration experience.

10/10
