This is not the place to discuss Bonnar's politics, stances on vaccines and other Covid policies etc. A man just died, this isn't the time or place

[–]Banda7 851 points852 points  (73 children)

Now that MMA has been around awhile I hope we don't see a bunch of early deaths like what happened in Pro Wrestling. RIP to a legend

[–]kinzer13 908 points909 points  (49 children)

We will. The intersection of brain damage and prolonged steroid use is a toxic recipe. Enlarged hearts and shrunken brain structures... Not pretty.

[–]JurgenShankly 321 points322 points  (27 children)

I hate how true this is. Those of us who were here from the start or close to are gonna see a lot of pioneers pass in the next couple years. Today has been a sad one. Shit, 2022 has been a sad one.

[–]mexicancardioMexico 194 points195 points  (23 children)

Randleman and Yamamoto were also unexpected and tragic. Sad stuff all around. Be well brother

[–]Distortion462 138 points139 points  (18 children)

Randleman was the first fighter I met in person. He could not have been more gracious and friendly. Rip to that legend.

[–]Not_RAMBO_Its_RAMO 78 points79 points  (3 children)

I remember thinking he looked terrifying but then I saw him in interviews and he seemed like a great guy.

[–]Grey_Orange 29 points30 points  (1 child)

I've never heard a bad thing said about Randleman.

[–]Botofumbepeninquain 37 points38 points  (5 children)

cro cop is my favorite fighter of all time. but when randleman passed away, i had to get an autographed picture. I chose him walking away from a KO'd Hammerfisted Cro Cop with no remorse. RIP RANDLEMAN. WAR RANDLEMAN. WAR HAMMER HOUSE. PRIDE NEVER DIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]Fake_Engineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't remember how I ended up with his email address. But when he got staph years ago I emailed back and forth with him a few times. Really nice guy.

Sadly, I am afraid that you will be proven right. Steroid abuse was probably a significant factor here.

Orlando Sanchez just died of a heart attack at age 40. Erick Silva retired from MMA because he had one this year at age 38, and swears it was because of Covid....

[–]RexorapterBig ol’ Mexican with a big ol’ head 987 points988 points  (24 children)

His fight vs Forrest was one of my earliest introductions to MMA/UFC.

One of the great all time fights.

RIP

Yeah I watched entire seasons of tuf on a terrible streaming site back then, at my first own place, coincidentally it was around Christmas too. I still have very fond memories of a slightly confused Bonnar talking to Diego Sanchez in the kitchen at the tuf house.

[–]JungleBoyJeremy 109 points110 points  (1 child)

Diego: “You’re not my dad”

Bonnar: ”… well we won’t know for sure until the results of the paternity tests come back”

[–]AndySemantic2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Diego taking all the tips off the asparagus and blending them into a smoothie - like he’d just discovered food for the first time

[–][deleted] 189 points190 points  (1 child)

It was literally the first fight MMA I ever saw. I had been a boxing fan previously

Was just randomly flipping channels, and called my brother over to watch "these 2 dudes beating the shit out of each other with no boxing gloves"

Watched the next few seasons of TUF, and have been a fan since.

Fuck, that's sad. He was a legend.

[–]ToothyGrin19135 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Same. I remember being in middle school or early high school and absolutely amazed at what I was witnessing. RIP to a legend

[–][deleted] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

That’s the case for a lot of us I think. Original tuf came on after Raw and I was hooked. So sad.

[–]rootokay 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Arguably, the most important fight in the history of the UFC.

Who knows what MMA would look like today if The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 was a failure.

[–]Syscrush 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. Forrest and Stephan made a billion dollar industry fighting for minimum wage.

[–]hdf0003 15 points16 points  (1 child)

That fight put the UFC on the map. I think it’s one of the most pivotal fights in the history of the “modern” version of how we perceive the organization.

[–]baggacans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same, first fight I ever saw and what got me into MMA. RIP

[–]MidgetCassanova 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. I personally think that fight really put MMA on the map and both men should be immortalized for their contribution to the sport's growth.

RIP to a legend.

The fact that he still had to work after UFC 🙁

[–]ChillinthamostGOOFCON 1 650 points651 points  (94 children)

I know you’re trying to make a point but a lot of retired professional athletes find other jobs.

[–]SeeDeeEeewatch your fingers in the ass please 513 points514 points  (48 children)

True but they usually have to squander millions to end up broke after any reasonable length pro career in stick&ball sports. In MMA, especially back when Bonnar fought, he probably only had to squander like $18,000 before his UFC nest egg ran dry.

[–]Grizz1371 171 points172 points  (38 children)

That doesn't sound far off from now.

[–]SeeDeeEeewatch your fingers in the ass please 134 points135 points  (37 children)

You’re not wrong. The fact that stars like Paddy still sign for 12/12 is so horribly sad that it’s almost funny. I guess that one might have something to do with his fraud of a manager but still

[–]doc_birdman 100 points101 points  (25 children)

12/12 and then half it is gone from fight camps and coaching staff fees. Then the rest is taxed.

There’s folks in this thread making more then Paddy’s pure fight pay. Obviously he makes more from endorsements but it’s pitiful that the “premier MMA league” pays its biggest starts a pittance.

[–]hoihomaNew Zealand 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Low tier fighters are worse off than someone with a middle class job. Grinding 9-5 would see you earn more than most prelim fighters, especially if you take off gym fees/nutrition.

[–]BanginBentleys 10 points11 points  (9 children)

It doesnt stop there.

As a canadian MMA fighter that has fought in States.

Ive pay both State and Canada tax when i go home.

[–]3L1TRomania 40 points41 points  (2 children)

[–]Taylor1350 14 points15 points  (1 child)

[–]ScumWithBoundariesPaulo "Soldier of Juice" Costa 1508 points1509 points  (74 children)

[–]xvq_Pregnant Paulo 🥰 342 points343 points  (15 children)

10000000000%. It cannot be overstated

Dana has said as much. If that season flopped, they were fucked. But it didn’t, and they hammered out a deal for more seasons in the literal parking lot.

I suggest anyone watch Fighting in the Age of Loneliness, but in particular the portion about TUF 1. RIP

[–]DustedGrooveMark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The sport literally changed over night because of the Ultimate Fighter finale. The right fight, the right time, the right context. It makes me so sad that Stephan’s life recently was filled with physical and mental unwellness on top of unfortunate events like his house fire. I hope people continue to remember what he did for the whole sport.

[–]Mariuslol 9 points10 points  (1 child)

And for anyone who hasnt seen the TUF finale between Bonnar and Forest!! GO WATCH IT

[–]tritian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just watched it again 30 minutes ago. Bonnar's reaction to losing, just collapsing to the ground with part exhaustion and part comedy. I like to believe that his reaction (and the banger of a fight of course) is what made Dana and the Fertitta brothers give him a contract too lol

[–]Imaginary_Tour9286 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I was litteraly just watching his fight with Jon Jones yesterday. RIP So tragic

[–]BryceBecause 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Stephan even won a round against Jon. God the talent Jon showed in that fight with those throws and elbows. Everyone knew he was bound to be a monster since he manhandled Stephan like that.

[–]MagjeeCanada 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I remember watching that live

He really turned put it in JJ in R3 when he gassed

[–]ricosuave_3355 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bonnar was a fricken tank of a human being. He could get thrashed and pieced up but he’d keep on coming

[–]Tsmalls1887Jamahal Hill is the Black Chuck Liddell 913 points914 points  (128 children)

People saying this came out of nowhere haven't been following how far Bonnars life has gone off the rails in the last few years. Still sad

[–]randose 151 points152 points  (14 children)

Would you care to elaborate? I'm out of the loop on this one, though I did hear he lost his house in a fire early this year.

[–]CharlieTheKI'm not your Buddeh, Buddeh 182 points183 points  (0 children)

He's struggled a lot with addiction to pain medications and possibly other substances. He also seemed to have a pretty tumultuous personal life, probably amplified by his addiction and physical issues post-fighting.

Honestly you can look up interviews with him in the past 5-10 years and get a sense of it if you're really curious, but it can be a rough watch. He was a really troubled guy and it's sad that he's gone so young.

[–]garandxUnited States 224 points225 points  (8 children)

Had multiple run ins with the law. Banned from hospitals due to being unruly and asking for pain pills

[–]only-shallowChad 172 points173 points  (4 children)

Didn't help that he was trying to start a pro wrestling career in his 40s. Got addicted to opioids and was trying to shake the addiction while also legitimately being in pain due to trying silly pro wrestling moves in his 40s. Opioid withdrawal plus genuine pain could send anyone insane

[–]Dirty_D_Dammit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh man I forgot about all of that somehow. This is significantly less shocking now. I remember some video of him just being blatantly in denial over how bad he really was. Sad stuff

[–]2reddit4me 30 points31 points  (1 child)

I worked security for both a local mma division and a hotel back in 2018. He harassed then groped a 7 month pregnant bartender. Destroyed his room. Asked my name and reached to shake my hand when I told him the bar was closed, then slapped my hand away. Kept calling the front desk and asking them to call his wife. Destroyed a TV. Had a prostitute in his room when we finally had the police remove him. Honestly he has been long gone for a long time.

There’s a lot more to the story but it would take forever to type it all out.

[–]hippotatolazerMahogany 440 points441 points  (98 children)

His decline into madness was really sad to see especially compared to the success and support Forrest got with the ufc

[–]The-FazScotland 180 points181 points  (47 children)

Probably helped a crazy amount that the ufc gave a great and relevant job to Griffin. Chuck and Hughes seemed to be in a much better place when they had their ufc staff jobs as well (they eventually got let go).

Seems like 9/10 fighters who have issues after fighting is due to lack of purpose and money. Griffin lucked out as he is one of the only fighters to get a ufc job not based on punditry/commentary

[–]LouisBolanos 122 points123 points  (8 children)

Dana actually asked Bonnar to retire and offered him the same job as Griffin, but then the Silva fight came up and he got popped for did PEDs and got fired.

[–]mexicancardioMexico 75 points76 points  (4 children)

TIL. Crazy to think how his life may have turned out if he accepted Dana's offer. Steady paycheck, health insurance, no more wear and tear from training

[–]DesignerOk9397 277 points278 points  (28 children)

Apparently Forrest got to keep the job because he actually showed up and did it, even though it was a Mafia style no-show job.

[–]Corey307 92 points93 points  (5 children)

From what I’ve read Forrest didn’t understand that it was a no-show job so he showed up to work in a suit and no one knew what to do with him. After a bit they gave him an office and now he’s a VP.

[–]limitbreaksolidus 56 points57 points  (3 children)

I heard they stuck him in the editing team and was one of the guys that helped create the ppv promos and is well loved among the interns as he helped keep morale up and stopped a couple from quitting

[–]imyourhabibi 163 points164 points  (2 children)

I heard he once breast fed one of the ring’s girls kids after she couldn’t find a sitter. Really awesome dude, was super cool about it too.

[–]DarkReaper90GOOFCON 1 124 points125 points  (2 children)

This. Everyone but Forrest just treated it like an unofficial pension. Forrest put in the work.

[–]CMacLarenGOOFCON 1 78 points79 points  (1 child)

I dunno if it was part of his position, but when I was at UFC 141 Griffin was constantly hyping the crowd up, coming around and taking pictures, and in general just chilling with the fans the whole time. Thought it was pretty cool.

[–]whygilbert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have nothing concrete to base this off of, but i’d be willing to bet that all was 100% just forrest being forrest. Everything I know about him says he’s a very humble dude that loves fighting and appreciates every waking second of his fame.

[–]FRINGEclassXMark Hunt's BFF 11 points12 points  (2 children)

[–]billyg4911 11 points12 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 118 points119 points  (9 children)

Legend tbh.

You can argue Bonnar vs Griffin as the most important fight in the history of MMA. Not just UFC.

It really helped snowball into what we have today.

Maybe there’s 1 or 2 fights equally as legendary… but to be on the mount rushmore of “most influential fights ever “ is pretty legendary.

Bonnar was a legend. Really sad to hear about his passing.

[–]joethecrow23GOOFCON 1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s even a question. One thing Dana has always been 100% right about was the importance of that fight.

So you want to be an Ultimate Fighter?

The first fight that comes to mind when someone asks what's a timeless classic in the UFC.

RIP Legend. People here are acting like he was on the same level as Mayhem Miller, and while Bonnar had his issues, he was nowhere near a train wreck. You can take a look at his insta to see all that he was working on and listen to this podcast from August that he did with Forrest Griffen to see that he was still chugging along just fine in life and still had all his faculties.

One thing I always thought was cool is that him and Forrest stayed friends all this time, and Bonnar even named his kid Griffen. It’s a shame to see another MMA legend go out way to soon , but I imagine we’ll see this more and more as the years go by unless that fighter’s union comes to fruition and they develop a care plan for retired athletes.

[–]smithdog223UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Dana did this guy dirty. BONNAR legit was one of the reasons UFC is as big as it is now. Fuck DANA!

[–]KingKoCFC 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I don’t like Dana but Tbf to him, he offered Bonnar a job just like he gave to to Chuck, Forrest and Matt Hughes and he turned him down.

[–]santidiaz44 49 points50 points  (8 children)

OOTL, people have been saying he had some addictions related to his passing? RIP

[–]Left4Lapars 80 points81 points  (6 children)

I remember maybe like a year or two ago there was a clip of him getting kicked out of a hospital trying to get pain meds. He had some serious lasting injuries and was pretty badly addicted to pain meds.

[–]SeeDeeEeewatch your fingers in the ass please 50 points51 points  (3 children)

That shit was horrible to watch. And then Ariel(?) interviewed him over the following week and he was still in complete denial over what the actual crux of his issue was. Doesn’t get much darker than opiate addiction. Hope he went knowing people still cared for him. Rest In Peace to a genuine legend.

Lost some friends to opiates these last 6 years or so and too often they’re convinced that they’re inherently hated or looked down on because of their addiction when in reality most people don’t even know how bad their problem is and even if they do they love them all the same.

Reach out to loved ones yall. No matter how deep you’ve dug yourself I promise the people who cared about you before will still want to help lift you up when you’re at rock bottom.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I genuinely sympathize with athlete pill abuse.

Bonnar likely had nagging injuries and lifelong pain, to a level that many of us couldn’t imagine.

Who wouldn’t want to ease that?

It’s a slippery slope. Tragic.

Everyone who is a fight fan needs to see Bonnar vs Griffin at TUF if they haven’t.

[–]Ok-Plastic-2992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not the type to try to talk to or get photos with fighters at events but a lot of fans go to events specifically for the opportunities to meet and greet.

At UFC 175 I don’t think I saw any fighter who appeared to be giving more time to fans that Bonnar was. I was in the concession line and he was having a conversation with someone he clearly knew well and people were asking him for photos and he very politely told them all that he wanted to finish his convo with his friend but if they waited around he would absolutely take the time for the photo. He just came off really well as a person there.

He was a real icon in a very important period in MMA. I know he seemed to have a tough past few years but I wish him peace and his family comfort.

[–]emericuh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just went back and looked at his record. The numbers don’t do it justice. 8-6 in the UFC, but he went the distance with several champions and icons of the sport. RIP, Bonnar. You were a hell of a fun fighter to watch.

[–]cben27Team Jędrzejczyk 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I've said this before Bonnar is, in my opinion, actually one of the most underrated fighters in MMA history. Despite a 15-9 record, his ONLY career losses (minus a fight stopped due to a cut which he avenged) were to eventual and former UFC champions. He was a high level fighter who fought the very best for his time.

RIP legend.
