I was just thinking this....
I am a woman in her 30s who is really into fiber arts (knitting/crochet/embroidery) and at the same time I am a bit of a nerd (I am a software engineer for a living, and as hobbies I am into boardgames including designing them, 3d printing/design, videogame dev). I feel like these latter hobbies are almost guaranteed for anyone working in programming, I find that most (not all!) people I meet through work will be into at least a subset of them and they are mostly (again, not all) male.
Whenever I talk about my hobbies to new people I meet I always feel there is this reaction of "oh! how cool!!" when I talk about my more nerdy, traditionally male hobbies and a reaction of "meh/boooring" when I talk about my traditionally female hobbies.
And idk it's just so stupid cause designing knitting and crochet patterns can be so f*cking difficult and challenging and rewarding and definitely on par if not cooler than hobby programming or 3d modelling or whatever.
Like, when a dude designs and 3d prints a part for a broken tap in his house or something (actual situation) everyone is like "omg how cool, it pays off to be smart, wow, science for the win!" but when I redesigned/modified crochet pattern to custom fit extra bits of my costume for an upcoming event people are like "meh, whatever, ok" and that was totally as difficult to design as a 3d model for printing
Anyways fibre art need more appreciation and also for how much smarts you need to have to make and modify patterns.
Rant over.
