It's a bit of a stupid question, I know. But I cant get it out of my head. I could see it going both ways.

Also, if not, where on the scale of wood-adjacent crafts would the turning point be? Basket weaving?

PSA to the algorithm: KNITTING AND CROCHET ARE TWO DIFFERENT CRAFTS

I’m so tired of Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest etc showing me crochet content for knitting hashtags or topics. Pinterest is the worst. I pinned one crochet picture for inspiration and the next thing you know my ENTIRE PINTEREST IS CROCHET. Not one knit stitch in sight on the suggestions for my knitting board! Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone have any tips on getting your feed to focus on knitting specifically? R/knitting is my only safe space 😭😭😭

My psychiatrist confused crocheting with knitting

I told her that I crochet in order to cope with my trichotillomania (basically, I obsessively pull out my own hair). She wrote in my report that I knit, which I don't. I'm not pissed or anything, actually I have been wanting to try knitting anyway. It's just funny to me because she's an elderly lady. Where I live all elderly ladys know how to knit, crochet, stitch, sew, etc. So, I thought she of all people would get it right.

Delete if not allowed please

I was just thinking this....

I am a woman in her 30s who is really into fiber arts (knitting/crochet/embroidery) and at the same time I am a bit of a nerd (I am a software engineer for a living, and as hobbies I am into boardgames including designing them, 3d printing/design, videogame dev). I feel like these latter hobbies are almost guaranteed for anyone working in programming, I find that most (not all!) people I meet through work will be into at least a subset of them and they are mostly (again, not all) male.

Whenever I talk about my hobbies to new people I meet I always feel there is this reaction of "oh! how cool!!" when I talk about my more nerdy, traditionally male hobbies and a reaction of "meh/boooring" when I talk about my traditionally female hobbies.

And idk it's just so stupid cause designing knitting and crochet patterns can be so f*cking difficult and challenging and rewarding and definitely on par if not cooler than hobby programming or 3d modelling or whatever.

Like, when a dude designs and 3d prints a part for a broken tap in his house or something (actual situation) everyone is like "omg how cool, it pays off to be smart, wow, science for the win!" but when I redesigned/modified crochet pattern to custom fit extra bits of my costume for an upcoming event people are like "meh, whatever, ok" and that was totally as difficult to design as a 3d model for printing

Anyways fibre art need more appreciation and also for how much smarts you need to have to make and modify patterns.

Rant over.

Knitting vs crocheting

So I showed my friend a crochet project I'm working on today and I don't think she knew it was crochet cus she said that crocheting is like the half-assed version of knitting and also a few months back I told a different friend about me crocheting and (she knits) she said that crocheting reminded her of like children but knitting is more for like older people so now I feel kinda self conscious and that crocheting isn't anything to be proud of even though I've been feeling rlly proud of my creations up until today. Anywho, based on my friend's comments, i was wondering what people's opinions were on knitting and crocheting, like if someone told u they crochet would you be less impressed than if they said they knit? Just wanted to know some opinions!

Inspired by the post by another post by u/coree1234 on here about sewing, I am wondering what your tell tale signs are for knit/crochet influencers not knowing what they're talking about?

I started knitting back in late 2020 and followed a couple of influencers religiously and was never really happy with my output. It wasn't until later I realized that they were bacially beginners themselves?! Now I run the other way when I see influencers promoting thick chunky roving wool garments or anything WAG/WAK

Fun names for a picnic crochet and knitting group.

Me and a few other friends all do yarn crafts. I crochet and knit (I consider myself mostly crocheter with knitting to change it up/relieve tension in my hands). 3 other people in the group are knitters are 1 other in a crocheter.

I’ve been trying to come up with a cute fun name for our little group. We meet up and find a nice park or picnic table to pall around and have snacks and do yarn stuffs but all the names I’m coming up with are for knitting or crocheting exclusively. (My favs so far were pic-knit or park hookers 😜). We’re all around 30-35 so any puns or slightly scandalous names are great as well!

Would you date a guy who knits/crochets?

I know this might seem like a stupid question but I’m a dude who really enjoys handicrafts like knitting and crocheting. I know it’s kind of girly but it’s a fun hobby for me and I like the feeling of creating something. Problem is I’m worried a potential girlfriend might see it as something “gay” or “weird”. Is it?

Share your knitting breakthroughs. I have been throwing and using big box craft store needles FOR 10 YEARS!

Finally purchased myself a couple quality needles and forced myself to switch to continental after a crocheter-turned-knitter friend told me how silly I was being. I now feel like my hands are rocket ships. I feel like I can turn out a hat every hour.

What breakthroughs did anyone else have after knitting for some time that made them slap their head and say "d'oh"?

P.S. I wanted to tag this as "Work In Progress," because it is me. I am the WIP.

Edit: you guys are adorable. I’m so glad my scheme worked and now I have all sorts of glorious knitting secrets to increase my game ;). I promise to share an FO soon. It will have a similar level of a professionalism :P

What are your hottest takes and/or most controversial opinions on knitting and fiber craft?

Be nice!

My most recent one is that, while it isn’t a grave offense, it’s still important to educate people who use the wrong term when referring to knitting (or any other fiber craft).

Knitting, crocheting, weaving, and sewing are all different crafts and different skills. It is important to emphasize that they aren’t fully interchangeable like cogs in a machine. Each one takes time, effort, and money to learn.

Allowing them to be mislabeled isn’t the worst, but it does contribute to a culture that undervalues handicrafts of all kinds.

Knit/ crochet crafts at Renaissance Faire

Hi, I have never been to a Ren Faire before but the host for my local one has asked if I would like to be a vendor this year. I make things from yarn and was wondering if they would be of interest. I have made and sold small dragons with eggs, dragon scale stitch gloves and small bags, mushroom shaped bags, and knight dolls. I have patterns for medieval flails and maces as well as helmets with visors. I also have a crocheted castle with a little princess.

I'm open to any suggestions. Thank you in advance for your time.

ETA. Thanks for the responses. For anyone who is interested , this is the Wilson Renaissance Faire and will be held the weekend of March 23-24 in Wilson, NC

Craft fair tables are really lacking individuality

I often see posts on tiktok of people complaining that their craft fair table barely made any sales. And no offence but… I think this is perhaps because of what they’re selling, along with nearly every. single. market setup I see posted to tiktok has the exact same things. Bees, turtles, octopuses, axlotls, chicks and chickens. And in no way am I hating on those amigurumi plushies, they’re super fun and easy to make and great for beginners. I fully acknowledge that it is definitely harder to make profits at craft fairs these days these days in general, as the crochet market is currently pretty oversaturated but like… it sort of seems like some people aren’t even.. trying to be different. You’re much more likely to sell if you stand out from the rest and it just seems like people don’t seem to understand that at all. This is purely my own opinion, I just want to see if any other fellow crocheters agree.

Why is knitting so much more popular than crochet?

I went to a local yarn store for the first time and was surprised that there was virtually no crochet resources. All the books, magazines, and patterns they had were about knitting. You’d think it would be closer to 50/50 or at least have some more crochet information.

I’ve tried my hand at both, and I can’t go back to knitting. Two needles are way clunkier than 1 hook. There are more versatile crochet stitches that are easier to learn than advanced knitting stitches beyond knitting and purling. Crocheting is also way faster.

So why is knitting so much more popular?

Edit: I got back into knitting and learned Continental method and now I’m hooked (pun not intended?). I get the hype of knitting now and am happy to call myself bistitchual! Thanks everyone for the inspiration!
